Dry eyes and contact Lenses

Hi, I have dry eye-in just the one eye!
I want to continue wearing my lenses.
Does anyone else wear lenses with dry eyes and what do you consider to be the best lenses?
How do you manage your dry eyes?
Has anyone thought of laser eye? I consider this a last resort as I worry that dry eye will become much worse after laser.

I have dry eyes and I wear silicone hydrogel monthly disposables. They are very comfy but I do also need to use eye drops- Hyco-san extra- about twice a day. And I can't wear my lenses every day.

underneaththeash · 21/01/2018 22:16

there's probably something wrong with your eye rather than the lens.

Please take it out and see your optician in the morning...contact lens wearers are more likely to develop a serious eye infections.

I have occasional dry eye symptoms in one eye but wear silicone hydrogel monthlies with no problems. When the dry eye becomes noticeable (watery) I use heat pads and massage to alleviate it. I have six-monthly lens checks and the optician has ok'd this routine. You really need to ask your optician all this as everyone is different.

My right eye gets really dry, and after a lot of trial and error am now on silicone hydrogel dailies, which cost a fortune. I take them out and put my glasses on immediately I get in from work. Your optician should be able to give you trials of different brands until you find the one that’s most comfortable for you.

As far as im aware silcon hydrogels whilst touted as the perfect lens ,can actually cause issues with dry eye and eye lid irritation more that traditional hydrogels. I'd leave them out for a while.

charliebear78 · 22/01/2018 11:00

I have just been given some Silicone Hydrogels to trial.
How much more are they?
Also does anyone buy their contacts online?-this appears much cheaper and lots of choice.
I have been wearing lenses for 20plus years.
I have also started doing massage and using heat on my eye.
Thanks for the replies I just wanted to see how others managed.

I've been wearing silicone hydrogels for more than 10 years so don't know how they compare in price, but it does vary a bit from brand to brand. I did get mine online for a while but you still have to have regular checkups at an optician so you need to factor in the cost of that, my prescription has changed quite a bit in the last few years so I now prefer getting them from my optician again as they can be changed whenever I need them to be.

My DH gets dry eye. He has keracotonus and wears lenses. He has opatanol eye drops from the doc and also buys blink drops from boots for if his eyes feel dry in the day. Says they are really good.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 22/01/2018 20:25

I pay £15.50 per month for my monthly disposable silicone hydogels plan with Specsavers, which includes yearly eye test, contact lens check, and a free pair of glasses every two years

Judydreamsofhorses · 22/01/2018 20:35

I pay £40 a month. Mine are the Clariti brand.

Do you clear your tear ducts by pressing a really hot face cloth or the backs of wooden spoons soaked in boiling water onto your eye lids? It makes a huge difference to the wearablity of my lenses.

charliebear78 · 23/01/2018 13:24

Thanks all..
£40 IS a lot-Yikes I hope my lenses won't be that much but if they are it will be worth it for the comfort again.
(I was paying £70 every 3 months before for monthly Toric Lenses)
I have just started putting a hot cloth on my eye and massaging the area every morning and night.
I have spent almost 5 months trying different lenses and the silicone Hydrogel MyDay lenses from Coopervision are the only ones that have been comfortable-I am back to not knowing I am wearing lenses again.
I was ready to give up!

I have dry eyes and gave up on contact lenses, my eyes feel much more comfortable now and I don't look like I've been caning it the night before.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 23/01/2018 13:45

Go with the expensive lenses. I had dry eyes and continued with my usual daily torics. At a routine check up the optician noticed that I was starting to get damage to my corneas due to dry eyes and lens wearing. I switched immediately and there difference is amazing.

Use Gel years at night.

Don’t mess about with your eye sight.

Commuterface · 23/01/2018 15:27

Be very careful OP. I had dry eyes for a year or so, changed my lenses, carried on wearing lenses, eyes started to become dry again and I ended up with an ulcer on my cornea. Now I can't wear lenses very often at all.

IncyWincySpiderOnRepeat · 23/01/2018 19:32

I've been wearing lenses for about 15 years and recently had to change as had started to suffer with very dry eyes. I was wearing the Cooper Vision monthly torics and finding them very uncomfortable. Am now wearing the Acuvue Oasys Dailies and they are by far the best lenses I have tried. They are very comfortable, great vision and seem to have completely resolved my dry eye issue. Pricey though at just over £40pm, be worth every penny, for me anyway.

If the dry eye problem is new definitely get it checked by any optician before trying any new lenses, can't be too careful with your eyes...
