I know I should see a doc but - pleurisy plus something else. Anyone advise?

Okay I know I should go back to the doc. I just need to find the time! Also trying to decide if I can just let this fade out on it’s own.

I have had an awful cough for about six weeks, and two weeks ago I got the most hideous and scary pains ever (in my chest) and I went to the doc and he told me I had a chest infection and pleurisy (though he listened for pleurisy and didn’t give me an X-ray).

I got antibiotics which didn’t do anything during their course, but my chest pains (a week and a bit
later) have significantly faded.

But every day, I feel really nauseated and tired. The nauseated thing is what’s freaking me out a bit. Should I be this sickly? Could it be more sinister than pleurisy and some kind of infection that will clear up on its own?

Anyone any experience of pleurisy? Should I have had a chest X-ray?

Get yourself to a dr, whether you have the time or not.
It could be pneumonia, it could be something else, but no-one here can diagnose you, and if you leave it you could end up seriously ill.

Yes, go back to your GP. Chest infections that don’t clear up properly in response to antibiotics can lead to lingering complications.

It doesn’t sound like you have a temperature though which would be a worrying symptom. An x-ray could show pneumonia or pleural effusions (liquid gathering in the pleural cavity) but I don’t think it would show pleurisy (which is inflammation).

I’m not a qmp by the way but have had recent experience in the family of pneumonia/pleurisy/sepsis. I would definitely go back if it’s not clearing.

Okay crikey I better get down to the doctor tomorrow. I had really been hoping it’d go away on its own!

Has anyone on here had pleurisy? Did it come with nausea?

I've had pleurisy. Diagnosed by my doctor listening to my chest plus me describing my symptoms. Treated by high dose anti-inflamatories (ibuprofen). Symptoms fairly similar to having the flu (aches and pains, weakness and headaches) plus the characteristic pain when breathing. I don't recall feeling nauseous. Mine likely developed from bronchitis and I wasn't given antibiotics because the doctor thought it was likely viral plus already on the wane at that point.

It was horrible and quite scary. I hope you feel much better very soon.

I have no experience of this but my mum had pneumonia and was very nauseous and violently sick with it, which led to her being initially wrongly diagnosed with food poisoning Confused

A doc once told me the nausea is down to mucus getting into your stomach and upsetting it. It is infected matter.
You are probably worn out to boot and your body needs some help fighting a horrible infection which is a lot of work for it to cope with.
if you have had a temperature, you might be dehydrated too which causes other sorts of symptoms.
Get to the doctor. No point trying to hope this is going away it sounds nasty and you are potentially doing more damage in the long run. Those lungs need to last a life time so take care of them.
