I've woken up very wheezy (I'm not asthmatic)

My children and DH have asthma/ viral induced wheeze. DS has been hospitalised many times with it on oxygen, steroids and nebulisers. He takes montelukast daily. DD takes blue and brown inhaler as she's less severe. DH has been asthmatic all his life. I had asthma as a child but never been wheezy since (am mid thirties). I've had a virus the last 3x days and this morning woke up v wheezy. It has freaked me out a bit... I've had 2 puffs of blue inhaler, do I need to see a doctor tomorrow or just use one of dHs inhalers and see what happens? I know how to treat other wheezy people but am quite surprised to need an inhaler myself.

Get yourself to see a doctor. You shouldn’t really be using other people’s medications tbh, but if you’re having difficulty breathing you need a doc ASAP.

Thanks, I will phone 111. I know I shouldn't use his inhaler but it has helped. We have a couple of spares in the house.

I get wheezy sometimes too when I'm ill so I have an inhaler ... not asthmatic either - I'd say see doctor ... mine usually try this first before antibiotic route a few weeks later if it's not gone

Do you have night cough? My 16yr old was diagnosed with croup mid-October but the cough at night continued until December. She is a gifted singer and cannot sing properly any more, her vocal chords are effected. She has been given an inhaler to try & see if it makes any difference. She is having a spirometry in Feb. Another villager is 83, never had asthma in his life, but has similar symptoms/advice.

I have a slight cough but not the tight asthma cough I know so well from my family! Main symptoms are fuzzy head, headache, aches and pains, congestion, exhaustion, gunky feeling in throat and chest, sore chest, hoarse voice, blocked and itchy ears. So I guess chest infection.

Sounds like you could have the flu? I'd see a doctor asap with breathing issues as could be a sign of chest infection or even pneumonia, which are complications of the flu virus.

Mummysailor · 21/01/2018 18:44

Yes I agree. Need GP check or at least talk it through on the phone.

honeysucklejasmine · 21/01/2018 18:46

Sounds like me. I had pneumonia.

Main symptoms are.... Shock you poor woman. You do sound like you've got a good dose of flu and you do need to see a doctor if breathing is wheezy and you're having to work hard to breathe.

Are you sleeping propped up on pillows? That will help, but I do hope you get yourself seen. Home care is great advice for people who are feeling crummy but can still breathe. When you can't breathe normally anymore (especially if it is so bad that it's led to borrowing someone else's inhaler), you need to get assessed by someone medical.

Exactly what I had over Christmas, it was the flu and then turned into a chest infection, was given antibiotics and blue inhaler.
Still not 100% after 4 weeks, chest is clear but still have a funny smokey feeling in my throat.
You really need to be seen.

Have just cancelled my daughter's grade 8 singing training for the spring as a result of picking up a cough in October which hasn't cleared. She just can't reach her notes. Devastated as singing 'is who she is' & she is a great singing performer at events, but we can't do anything about it.
