toddler nosebleeds

Ok, probably another paranoid first-time mum haven't a clue what I'm doing type of question. Dd, 21 months, has had 3 nosebleeds today. One of them was with dp and he said it was very sudden and heavy but for a brief time. The second one was with me and was also very sudden but went on for a couple of minutes. The third one was much smaller and happened more gradually. She hasn't been particularly bothered by it (quite fascinated in fact, now keeps dabbing at her nose and looking for blood ). She's not ill, no cold etc. Should I worry or is this absolutely normal? I mean I wouldn't think twice about me having a nosebleed but I've never heard of it happening in a toddler.

Mine get them all the time. The veins in the nose are v small and thin, and can burst for no real reason, causing nosebleeds. Dd2 used to get them loads at the same age, but they have reduced as she got older. The gp said if it happens regularly or profusely then it is a simple matter of cauterising the vein. Hth.

Yes, that helps lots lou, thanks. I kind of thought I might be being stupid.

Not being stupid at all! The first time I saw dd2 with one I thought she had been attacked. She woke up in the morning and when I went in her face and bedclothes were covered in blood. It panicked me! I'm just further down the line that's all, having four now

DD2 regularly had nosebleeds, STF. Her white cot would be covered in bloody hand prints!! It was quite scary to begin with and I did take her to the Dr just to check out her general health. When they kept on occurring I saw another dr who gave her homepathic medicine and that was marvellous. It stopped the bleeds completely for a while and then when she did have a few more, they were much lighter. She's 8yo and hasn't had one for ages now (famous last words!). Hth.

Don't forget to call 999 so that Dr. Southall doesn't think that you are trying to kill your baby. Sorry....couldn't resist. I just think that it's amazing that he thought that any normal parent would call 999 when their baby had a nose bleed. And maybe we should call 999 when they skin their knees as well.

Did he really SofiaAmes? !

My DS, 33 mths, has nose bleeds every week. Had one last night all over the bed covers again.... Took him to the doctors twice about this, but they say that unless he has one every day for the next two weeks, they won't do anything about it. To be fair, he can go a few weeks without one, but then will have 2 or 3 the next week. It used to really scare me, but I have got used to it now.

strangerthanfiction · 28/07/2004 11:49

Thanks everyone. I didn't even consider calling 999 so do you think Dr. Southall should get Social Services in to see me?

Actually I remember my brother had loads of nosebleeds when we were kids but I thought they were when he was older.

Actually, the Dr Southall thing was that he reckoned parents should call a dr for a nosebleed and breathing difficulties, not a nosebleed alone. So panic ye not!
