Vomiting through the night (no diarrhoea), sore throat, 38.5 temp, feeling hot and cold... (he’s 13).

What’s your best tips? Mum would tuck us up in bed with tea and toast.

Rehydration salts.

Tuck up, bowl beside bed just in case. Clear fluids - doesn’t really matter what. Tea has milk so less good as. Increases risk of vomiting a tiny amount. Rehydration salts aren’t necessary for a short term virus in an otherwise healthy older child. Just water or something with a little sugar like Ribena. I’d forego the toast until fluids were staying down. Tell him to sip rather than gulp drinks - small and often.

Trying to get soluble paracetamol down him in small sips to get the temp down. Poor kid has blotchy face with all the vomiting.

Flat full fat Coke is good, you can make it home flat by putting a teaspoon of glucose in. Or I add a teaspoon of glucose to weak squash. Sips only to start.

I like to nibble on rich tea or digestives when I’m sick.
Also lucozade is good with all the sugar. Other than that a dvd and bed.

Fekko · 19/01/2018 08:13

Oh yes - I forgot the coke trick! Is the caffeine ok though? I always get painkillers without it.

Mine never have temps with vomiting and diahorrea so I would be a bit concerned tbh. Keep a close eye on him. Agree with all the advice about little sips of water and dry toast. I always like plain ginger biscuits too when recovering from vomiting.

Fekko · 19/01/2018 08:15

Lucozaid tasted nice when I was little (that cellophane wrapped bottle) and I enjoyed t when I was sick. It’s not the same now is it- or is there an ‘original’ version?

No diarrhoea here - just vomiting up anything that goes down (he’s only had water since tea time - he didn’t want any dinner) and the temperature. I very rarely get temperatures but his dad does when he gets sick.

If all else is ok, then yep. Flat lemonade is good, too. But basically any clear fluid he fancies and keeps down. Or tbh, any clear fluid he fancies. It doesn't really matter if it occasionally comes back up, as long as more stays down than comes up. Little and often will keep it down better than big gulps.

Majuna · 19/01/2018 08:19

Caffiene is used in medication to enhance the painkilling effect of paracetamol. It makes it more effective.

ItsMeUsername · 19/01/2018 08:20

Small sips of flat Coke or flat Pink Lucozade do the trick around here. Followed up by rice cakes when the vomiting has stopped.

It's a tried and tested method in this house, as at one point we seemed to have some kind of vomiting virus every year. (Touch wood Shock). I still keep supplies just in case.
