Can you give me positive physio experiences please - I've got issues with my lower back and I know it's affecting my neck, hip and back and it's affecting my life - I must go!! But
I'm scared of being what I feel is a hippo and it be my my fault for not losing weight beforehand .... I'm being a drama queen I know but do other rather flumpy people go to physio?
Hoping a physio may respond!!

As a Physio we see everybody and anybody who have been referred to us, please don't worry - go to your appointment.

Thanks - I'm being a bit daft aren't I? Blush partly shame I'm a bit chunky and blame myself for my bodily problems .... also that health anxiety stupidity in the back of my mind - bearing in mind I work in medical research and have a PhD in medicine research, so should be a bit more sensible .... but as my friend says everyone is bonkers when you get to know them !! .... and I'm bonkers because I keep thinking oh sore hip - google says it's a brain tumour /
Liver disease/ osteo arthritis ..... yes insane and ridiculous but I guess that's the stupid me sneaking out lol 😆

I saw a male NHS physio today for my back. Never met him before. He was courteous, polite, helpful. Firm, warm, gentle hands - I felt very safe.

The only unpleasant bit was when he asked me to turn around so that he could see my back, and I got a great big, unexpected, eyeful of myself in a mirror that I hadn't noticed earlier. Ah, the beautiful sagging muffin-top. (I was in jeans and bra.) He never showed any reaction to how I looked. That's not his job. He was completely professional and disinterested.

Though at the end, when we were discussing 'what next', he did mention loosing weight. But it was as part of the overall discussion, and recognised that I wasn't an idiot, I already knew about this, but, professionally, he had to include it. And, again, it was non-judgemental.

So go on, make the appointment. Nobody is going to be nasty about your shape. All they'll want is to help you and to support you helping yourself.

Go! My physio is fab. The difference in my posture, balance and back pain is incredible. Go go go!! And then come back and tell us how fab you feel

I'm seeing a physio after a specialist found a muscular problem as well as a joint problem. I've also seen them for frozen shoulder. They will tailor your exercises to you, they won't do anything that will cause damage. I'm overweight because I can't exercise properly but it is getting better, for instance I no longer need a walking stick.

Brilliant thanks guys, I'll fix an appointment today (would have done it before but got a sickness bug 🤢)
Will report back!

Mine has been fab and I went on to have Physio at the gym too. Apparently they do get a lot of people who don't do the exercises at home and it's pretty obvious. I think some people assume it's the Physio who fixes you but they only guide you how to do it.

strugglingtodomybest · 18/01/2018 07:53

Yes Lifebegins, my friend is a physio and she says that a lot of people think she's going to 'cure' them, but actually, they won't get better unless they do the exercises they are shown at physio at home.

Good luck op!

Physio changed my life, more than ten years later I'm still able to do way more than I used to. Go, and do the exercises they set you.

allypally999 · 18/01/2018 11:51

I went to a sports physio first and they did say I was overweight (really! I hadn't noticed haha!) and I did lose weight but its all back on now and I see a different lovely physio (also lower back) who is nice and doesn't comment.

flumpybear · 19/01/2018 18:39

Thanks I've chosen to see my personal trainers own physio - I asked her who she was- so I can ensure we incorporate my training g with physio ... just need to make the damn appointment still on my sickbed lol! 🤮🤢
