Joint Aches & Wheat/ Gluten

Tillyboo · 26/04/2007 17:59

Not sure if this is in the right place - maybe 'Allergies' would be better ?
Anyway, I've just tried a low carb diet and my normally painful and extremely achey hips were greatly improved over about 7 weeks.
I have been gradually re-introducing carbs into my diet, notibly bread and cereals and the bad aches & pains are slowly returning - V Miserabe
Has anyone else experienced joint aches and pains from eating wheat etc. ?
I'm thinking of going to a nutritionist to have a test but thought I'd post on here first

Try taking glucosamine tablets. They help with joint pain.

Tillyboo · 26/04/2007 18:48

Tried them but no difference unfortunately.
It's weird as it's only my hips and my hands that I have a problem with ...
I've started taking Co Enzyme Q10 which has helped though.

I think I have noticed this too recently so I am interested by your post

I also rate the coQ10 - find it gives me noticeably more energy!

I've had these joint aches and pains since dd was born, she's three now ! So, it's been going on for some time and has got worse this past year.
Can a food sensitivity pop up out of the blue ?
I love bread and have always eaten my fair share but perhaps something in pregnancy and beyond has triggered a sensitivity.
I don't know enough about this subject but I think I will speak to a nutritionist to get some more information and advice.
IdreamofDaleks - what's your situation and symptoms. ?

Sacro iliac joint pain, especially on one side, tillyboo. My dd is 7 now - I have spent the last 3 years trying to sort out my sore joint and hundreds of pounds on osteo, chiro, acupuncture, chinese medicine & pilates. Things are better than they were but it is still painful to exercise.

I have had 2 weeks of reducing my carbs and cutting out alcohol and it is feeling easier.

Would be v interested to hear what your nutritionist has to say - please report back!

Tillyboo · 26/04/2007 19:36

Wow !
Me too ... I had a bad riding accident about 18 yrs ago in which I got compressed nerves. I too have had chronic Sacro iliac pain on and off since but since having my dd it was constant. I've been backwards and forwards to a fab Osteo who eases the pain every now and again as the joint completely ceases up but the carb reduction helped enormously too.
He told me once the joints fuse together the pain will reduce because there will be no more grating of the vertebrae against each other.
I'll post again when I've been to see the N so keep an eye out.
It's a very miserable pain/ discomfort and I sympathise totally as it's relentless. I don't know about you but it's pretty debilitating in as much as you just don't feel like being active cos of the pain.
I was told not to swim or ride. Cycling and walking were recommended.
My Psoas muscles have also been a problem (my hip pain) so my whole pelvic/ back area has been a nightmare to out up with - it's not as if you can rest it either.

Sorry to hear you have this kind of trouble too...I was advised to do no exercise except pilates as any exercise aggravates the pain for me

I keep meaning to start pilates again as that did make a positive impact when I did it a couple of years back. Have you ever tried it?

I find it quite debilitating as well. I find sitting on the ground really hard to do but as a parent you often need to!
Although I'm sorry you have the same kind of problem it's nice to find someone to relate to about it

Tillyboo · 26/04/2007 20:39

Yep, my sentiments exactly. It's comforting to know that you are not being a whinge and that your own aches and pains are very rea as other people are going through the same thing.
I am so fed up with hearing myself say/ think 'My back hurts, my hips hurt, I feel so miserable'.
If I stay still for too long i.e. sitting, griving etc. then I'm so stiff getting mobile again. I've tried a very gentle form of a Yoga (Dru Yoga) but it's hard to commit every week so I may invest in a DVD to do at home.
Keep me posted about your progress with the low carbs and alcohol

Tillyboo does your hip hurt in the morning when you wake up?

Tillyboo · 27/04/2007 09:12

I have a tempur style mattress which has helped but I get the most pain when I have been standing or walking for a while. Ironing is a killer !

Yes Gluten can have an affect on joints .. particularly if you suffer from an auto-immune arthritic condition like rheumatic arthritis (but not if osteo)

it is worth just continuing with the gluten-free diet (there are many products to aid with this in major supermarkets)

glucosamine is also supposed to be good joint support

as is bromelaine (which is extracted from pineapples)

Tillyboo · 27/04/2007 09:54

Is there a quick reference list of foods that have Gluten in them or is it just a case of looking at each and every label ?

YES!! they do. Ive got a gluten/wheat intolerance and suffered from terrible, agonising joint pain before i went gluten free. It was crippling in my wrists, elbows, hips, knees and ankles. I'm more or less free of pain now
