Got a severe middle ear infection. In agony. Just been to out of hours GP. Got pain relief & antibiotics. Said my ear drum may burst. Still in acute pain. Have had two babies & it’s up there in terms of intensity.
Is it better the ear drum bursts? Or how soon will I feel any relief from this awful pain. I’m not a whoosh but it’s reducing me to tears.

Oh dear, that sounds excruciating. I used to suffer dreadful earaches. Lying down put more pressure on and made it worse. I'd sometimes get some relief from a warm hot water bottle held close by the ear.

When my DS had bad earache, his ear drum perforated and bled and it did seem to relieve some of the pressure and pain.
Flowers I hope the meds kick in soon OP.

I feel your pain. I'm sat up with earache. Already been on antibiotics but it's came back😔. I'm going back the docs tomorrow. Does your ear feel blocked?

Nitrobetty1 · 14/01/2018 23:14

Thank you for your sympathy. Ear totally blocked/deaf. Sitting up in bed with hot water bottle balanced on ear. In agony. Just took more codeine. Probably had too much.. feeling desperate.

This happened to my daughter and her ear drum burst. Lie on the hot water bottle - with your ear pressed against it, I mean. Put pressure on that ear. (You might have to put something between your ear and the bottle.)

MyBrilliantDisguise · 14/01/2018 23:17

You can alternate paracetemol and ibuprofen (every two hours take two pills of one or the other, so you're having each of them every four hours.)

Grumpyoldwoman007 · 14/01/2018 23:19

You poor thing. Earache is horrible. I cried with pain at the doctors surgery and could see the gp just didn't understand the pain and thought I was making a drama out of a simple infection. 4 courses of antibiotics later was finally sent to ENT as an emergency and had to have my ears drained and a lng course of ear drops and ointment. It was horrendous and now whenever I get a twinge of pain I get very anxious. I totally sympathise and hope it gets better very soon

I feel your pain OP. I recently had the same. I'm no wuss either, I'd rather give birth than have one again. I took some tramadol I had left over from something else.

My ear drum didn't burst but the antibiotics seemed to of done the job.

I hope you get some relief soon! I also put a warm flannel against my ear as a PP suggested.

Grimmfebruary · 14/01/2018 23:40

You’ll know if it bursts, Jesus wept, I never knew pain like it.

Alternate with pain relief and ibuprofen every 2 hours. Hot water bottle. Feel very dirty for yourself :(

Grimmfebruary · 14/01/2018 23:40

Very sorry!!* haha!

Haudyerwheesht · 14/01/2018 23:49

w😁You have my absolute sympathy. Like everyone else has sAid hot water bottle and painkillers. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in quickly. Try and view this as you bring at the worst point and it's going to improve.

Nitrobetty1 · 14/01/2018 23:52

Thanks for your sympathy I just want to die RN.

Have you had an anti histamine ? Can reduce the fluid and relieve some of the pressure ?

Greensleeves · 14/01/2018 23:56

Oh you poor sausage Sad

When mine burst the pain was blinding, but it quickly subsided and it was definitely better after that, the pressure was relieved.

Hot water bottle/wheatbag and all the painkillers you can safely take, and plenty of fluids.

Flowers for you

friendlymum67 · 15/01/2018 00:00

You have my sympathies too Op, l had the same last year.

I was in tears with the pain, alternating Co codamol and ibuprofen eventually reduced the pain. Really hope it starts to subside soon. Like grumpy l get very twitchy if l get pain in my ears now.

nuffsenuff · 15/01/2018 11:27

Total sympathy. I remember having this and crying for hours. Then it burst and as disgusting as it was having an oozing ear, the relief was almost instant.

toldmywrath · 16/01/2018 11:50

How are you now @Nitrobetty1?
