dd was prescribed fucithalmic (?) ointment for conjuntivitis on tuesday and was allowed to return to nursery as we had started the tratment. it now appears i have caught conjunctivitis - can i use her ointment? it says it is prescription only and i dont really want to have to go the doctors (£26) to get some. otherwise, does anyone know if i can buy something over the counter?
thought i had been scrupulous with handwashing etc but obviously not

Read the leaflet first, and then use it. DD was prescibed a tube of antibiotic cream which gets used on everyone

you can get stuff (antibiotic eyedrops) for conjunctivitis over the counter now - you just need to ask the pharmacist.

snugglebumnappies · 26/04/2007 12:04

It won't cause you any harm, unles the tip of the applicator has touched DD's eyes, in which case you will be recontaminating yourself However the cream can make your eyesight blurry. Not sure if you are in the UK (as you had to pay to see GP) but if you are you can buy optrex with cloromphenicol over the counter and this works well for conjunctivitis

Fucidin is now available over the counter anyway olivo, so either way you are covered.
But if you have been using the applicator on the tube of ointment to apply it to dd's eyes, I would have thought there was a risk of you repeat infecting each other.

Marina · 26/04/2007 12:05

Oh, I was wrong. It is chloramphenicol that is now o/c, sorry

thanks folks! fortunately, i dont do make up (a cheeky eye lash tint for a special occasion though ) so no wastage there. will look out for the OTC one may get some to keep in.

ooh i'm so slow i missed a few. i'm in the channel islands but we do have boots so will try and go there after work.it probably has touched her eye- she's not the most cooperative of babies when it comes to medication - then again, i'll forgive her, she's only 8 months!!

Thought that's where you might be, have family in Guernsey, you will be able to get it fine from Boots.
