TMI- itchy nether regions

For about the last three weeks I have had an itchy bum which has progressed to an itchy fanjo, the skin around the vagina/perineum and all around my clitoris.
I think I might have a small hemorrhoid which started the itch.
It doesn't itch all the time, but seems worse at night.
I wondered about worms, but neither child (6 and 9) have them at the moment and haven't for ages. I've been checking when I poo and there are no signs of worms at all.
My whole vulva area and around the clitoris feels dry as well as itchy.
Is there something I can buy over the counter?

I would try worm pills just in case and rule it out.

I have suffered stress related itching many times in the past, presents as you describe. My gp said to use Vaseline.

A gynaecologist told me that as you get older it’s a good idea to use a vaginal moisturiser to maintain elasticity. That’s not so much related to itching but could yelp dry skin. You can buy over the counter, the last one I bought was a gel made by the Canesten thrush cream brand (it’s not for thrush though) think it was an intimate moisturiser.

A family member also suffers from excema around her vagina but that would be quite obvious.

Piles can be itchy too but I would think only around the bum.

Actually, I got a bit desperate last night, couldn't sleep for worrying about worms, so I got up and put some vaseline on and it did seem to help.
It hasn't seemed too bad today. I'll see how I go tonight and maybe worm myself tomorrow (that sounds awful!) I have some left from the last bout the kids had. I really don't think it's worms. I think maybe it got a bit dry/irritated and I scratched and now it's a vicious circle.

Go and see your doctor or practice nurse. It's is usually a bit of dkin irritation and so easily fixed. Just go!!!!

How old are you?

Itchybum1 · 09/01/2018 08:25

I'm 42, not menopausal or anything. I made a very deliberate effort not to scratch all yday and it was much better during the day and last night.

OP let me know how you get on . I too have had itchy bum cheeks for weeks!

There is some improvement now but I do think the scratch ,itch cycle is a tricky one .

I'm begining to think mine is excema/dry skin .

If it's any help to anyone I have found Body Shop's foaming tea tree cleanser www.thebodyshop.com/en-gb/range/view-all/tea-tree-skin-clearing-foaming-cleanser/p/p000811 soothing and doesn't sting any broken skin .

I find any creams make the itch worse .

Blobby10 · 09/01/2018 12:51

I had this and eventually discovered it was caused by me rubbing too hard with soap when in the shower! I was also a bit sensitive to shower gel so now am very gentle and only use one type of bar soap. Never had it since .
However, I have also had the same symptoms caused by worms from my little darlings!! As your itching spread from bum forward this might be more probable

itchybum1 · 09/01/2018 14:00

Still poo checking and absolutely no signs of worms, is it likely to be worms if I've been itchy for weeks and not seen worms at all in that time? Any time the kids have had worms, they've been very visible in poo. Ugh, the disgusting things that become normal with kids! Neither kid has worms at the mo or has had them recently at all.

Since I've been consciously not giving in to scratch, it has seemed better, feels more like dry, irritated skin.

I'll see if I can get to the pharmacy tomorrow and maybe buy some intimate moisturiser or something.

Same happened to me at around the same age. Stopped using soap/shower gel the area and now use e45 (or similar) cream wash. What a difference! I was going round the twist with the itching.

itchybum1 · 09/01/2018 14:12

Oooh, that's a thought. DS has sensitive skin, so uses something similar. Did it just happen? Without prior sensitivity? I haven't changed products really.

thedevilinablackdress · 09/01/2018 15:07

Yep, wasn't using anything new.

I had tried moisturisers but it was only when I stopped soap it got better

GothMummy · 09/01/2018 18:11

Be aware (I mean, dont freak out but inform yourself) of the possibility of Lichen Sclerosis. I wondered and worried about an itch which I tried to treat with thrush treatment/intimate itching cream/anusol/moisturisers/vitamin E Oil/ changing washing powder/etc and when I finally went to the GP was eventually diagnosed with lichen sclerosis.

itchybum1 · 09/01/2018 19:26

I've heard about it in my Googling, but not sure what it is.

itchybum1 · 09/01/2018 19:29

Hmm, have checked out the NHS page. I suppose I'll have to have a look with a mirror at some point......

GothMummy · 09/01/2018 21:20

Just get it checked out. If it is LS, then once its under control with the steroid cream you will be comfortable again!

Doctordonowt · 09/01/2018 21:27

Slather with sudocreme. Don’t use toilet paper, but dab with moist wipes to clean. An Anusol suppository will also help calm thing down. Also try changing to a gentle laundry product. I use Fairy, but any sensitive washing gel is probably just as good.

Snowyjoey · 09/01/2018 21:29

My GP prescribed epaderm ointment for this exact problem. It cleared it up for me in a couple of weeks of persistent use, and now I generally smear a bit on once a week or so and it's seemed to keep any dry skin at bay!

delilahbucket · 09/01/2018 21:35

A drop in oestrogen can cause this. Are you peri-menopausal?

hannah1992 · 09/01/2018 21:36

I had similar when I was pregnant. I thought it was thrush. Midwife had a look and said no but looked quite dry and you get into an itch scratch cycle and the more you scratch the more it itches so the more you scratch then the more it itches and so on. Best thing to do is the Vaseline to stop any chafing and try hard not to scratch it and let it heal.

bhdhnghjn · 09/01/2018 22:13

I would try coconut oil I have used this before for thrush etc and it's cleared within 24 hours

Myself and my dd both have sensitive skin and sometimes the wrong knicker/tight jeans can rub and make me sore

itchybum1 · 12/01/2018 10:22

Still itchy, although less so. The vaseline seems to help. Still checking my poo and still nothing wormy, but I've finally managed to get to the chemist today, so have wormed myself in case!

OP posts:
Loperello · 26/04/2019 10:17

Any news on this please? Suffering the same myself after 2 children! Wormed myself, been to the doctor's and think I'll be going back again after another few sleepless nights itching! Many thanks.
