What to call a clinic for obese children?

helpadoctor · 25/04/2007 11:02

I'm a regular who has namechanged as I don't want to be identifiable in rl.

I need your views on the name for a clinic that will see young people, initially under 11s as it's a pilot project, who are obese. The children will have been identified in primary care and referred if there is a concern that either their obesity is causing them to have a health problem or a health problem may be causing their obesity iyswim.

I know that it might seem ridiculous to have to give the clinic a name but in order to develop a patient information leaflet about the clinic it has to have a name. The aim is that we will send out a leaflet with the appointments explaining the clinic setup etc and the clinic name would appear as the title of the leaflet and would be used within it.

Obviously we want something that will not be stigmatising!

Thanks for your help.

How about the growth and wellbeing clinic?

wildwoman · 25/04/2007 11:08

Does it have to have a descriptive title?

notpph · 25/04/2007 11:08

EATWELL/ BeWELL

earlgrey · 25/04/2007 11:08

kittylette · 25/04/2007 11:11

notpph · 25/04/2007 11:12

wildwoman · 25/04/2007 11:12

I may be getting a little soft and fluffy here but couldn't it have a more inspirational name rather than counding so cold and clinical iyswim?

notpph · 25/04/2007 11:12

ww as i said

wildwoman · 25/04/2007 11:13

sounding, oops

nailpolish · 25/04/2007 11:13

i think just BeWell

even the word 'eat' would put off a shy teen

wildwoman · 25/04/2007 11:14

But eat well/ be well implies that food is the only issue, rather than including excersise and emotional issues.

kittylette · 25/04/2007 11:16

i agree, weight isnt just food related.

I dont see why people are saying 'dont say weight' like its an offensive word, when it isnt.

i vote for 'Weight and Wellbeing'

helpadoctor · 25/04/2007 11:18

I'm pleased that several of you like the growth and wellbeing clinc as that's my favourite too!

The clinic is going to be in a children's oitpatient department. We hope that most children will only come for three visits, one for an appointment with a doctort, then another for some bloods/tests with a nurse then afinal appointment with a doctor. All of the dietary support, excercise and activity stuff is going to be done in primary care by the school health nurses, dieticians and sports workers from the local authourity.

What's the point of the clinic? Is it to discuss diet? Exercise? Other issues which may be affecting weight?

helpadoctor · 25/04/2007 11:59

The clinic will only see children who have a BMI of greater than the 99.6th centile for their age.

It's to check the overall health of the child and identify those who are either at risk of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, high cholesterol and triglycerides etc or in whom there might be an underlying medical cause eg hypothyroid, other hormonal problem, genetic problem etc.

Also some children who might have obstructive sleep apnoea would be sen in the clinic as would some who have joint problems that might be related to their weight.

Right, so it's a clinic that checks for common conditions that can be caused / aggravated by obesity? Sounds like a very good idea. The clinic itself though has nothing to do with diet or exercise, as you've said, they are referred for that.
I vote for childhood weight and wellbeing clinic.

Isn't obesity more than just being overweight, DS was upset about being the heaviest in class but looks thin (can't get school trousers long enough for his waist size) He has been measured as having low body fat (whole family heavy bones and muscular)

so having weight in the title wouldn't always be the best thing
