Bleeding between periods, short cycles

I have a two year old and my periods only returned about ten months ago. They are very different to how they were before - shorter (25 days), and most months I have had spotting from ovulation until my period starts.

I had a smear about a year ago, which was fine, so I assume it is unlikely to be anything untoward. I am 39 and also still breastfeeding, so I have been assuming that it is something hormonal, and hoping it would go away, but it hasn't.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does it warrant a trip to the gp? I suffer from health anxiety and my two responses to illness are to either ignore it completely or to convince myself that I am going to die, with no in-between. So I just want to gauge what a normal reaction to this should be!

I went to docs for a similar thing last week - had couple months spotting after ovulation, gp did an exam and I was diagnosed with a cervical ectropian which can bleed when hormones change in run up to period. These are common apparently and have no connection to cancer

Thanks sillysausage I wonder if it is that. I was told that I had cervical erosion when I had bleeding in my first pregnancy, but funnily enough I never had it since, including my second pregnancy. Funny that it only ever happens after ovulation too. Do you mind if I ask what the exam entails - was it like a smear?

She just had a look, she could tell straight away as they are quite distinctive. I asked if I needed a smear but she said no, I'm due one in a couple months anyway. It's very small so unless it gets worse I don't need it cauterised. I have health anxiety and of course I panicked

Ahh that doesn't sound too awful. I guess I will get it checked out just to make sure

I had the same, GP did an internal and found nothing, I need an internal scan but haven't sorted it yet. Due to how long it had been going on she did blood tests and I have an underactive thyroid and was anaemic. Since starting thyroid medication the spotting/bleeding has reduced. Go and get checked, I left it ages and when I look back i was in a terrible state.

It's so worrying and if you are like me you google 🙄 my gp explained that spotting is quite common even without any erosion etc, can be caused by lots of things. Hormones are the brain of my life at the min, coupled with anxiety it can be awful.

Just out of interest how long before your period does the spotting start? I had DC2 in May and have light spotting around five days before period but only post DC2.

I've had a letter to say my smear is due so will book in but i'm curious...

blamethecat · 06/01/2018 20:13

For me I got to a point where I had about 10 days bleed free from the end of one period until spotting started.

BrawneLamia · 06/01/2018 20:18

I usually spot a bit around ovulation (this has always happened to me), then it either stops then starts again a day or two before my period, or some months it seems to last for the whole time from ovulation until my period. The other thing is that my cycles have got shorter, so I thought it might be a prememopausal thing.
