hoping to avoid A&E as i'll have to bring ds as he still breastfeeds alot and i can't pump a full feed for him

i was carrying dd down the steps in soft play today and on the last step my foot buckled and i heard a crunching sound.

it was sore at first but not too bad, i was hobbling around just fine, but as the day went on the pain became blinding til i can only describe it as the same intensity as late first stage contractions but without the dying down in between.

dp went and got me neurofen and i'm back to the hobbling around stage, it's still sore but bearable.

do i need to head to A&E tomorrow or do you reckon it'll be ok? i mean i wouldn't be able to walk on a break at all right?

i know it's boring people but i'm completely incapable of making decisions like this for myself (i broke my ribs and refused to go to hospital before as i'm very hospital-phobic )

get it xrayed at a and e. could be broken and it's the only sure way to tell. sounds nasty!

RosaLuxembourg · 24/04/2007 20:16

I did yesterday - it was very painful and I couldn't walk on it but today it has all swelled up and gone black and blue but it is bearable to walk on.
I'm sure I should have got it checked out yesterday but I didn't have time - would feel compelled to say to you that you shouldn't be as blase though but go and get it looked at.

Hillls · 24/04/2007 20:17

Sounds like you may have torn a ligament, ouch! I'd get it x-rayed though just to be sure

burstingbug · 24/04/2007 20:23

Pink, foot up with frozen peas, although does sound like it needs to get checked out sooner rather than later.
I had a flat packed computer desk fall on my ankle, didn't swell or change colour, hurt like hell but I carried on and ignored it. It still wasn't right a few weeks later so went to our local hospital to get it looked at. I was told off for not going straight away as I chipped a bone. Had to have physio for several weeks as I had altered the way I walked to compansate the injury.

bugger

I did something similar and after 2 days finally went in. I'd sprained it but they were great at giving me exercises & support bandages etc. Do you have one of those minor injuries places - they were great for me. They told me a sprain is actually worse than a simple break - takes longer to heal. I wish I'd done the exercises a bit more enthusiastically as my ankle locked for about 3 years and still doesn't bend properly. Do go and get it checked in the mean time you need rest , ice, compression and elevation. IE foot up, bandage on, ice pack in front of the tv plus some nurofen gel.

That crunch doesn't automatically mean it is broken but it is horrid, very painful and sickening at the time. tbh if it isn't any better tomorrow pick a quiet time to go to A and E to get it xrayed just to rule it out. I badly sprained mine before Christmas and it took until end of March to get right as I didn't go to A nd E but rested it with ice etc and it became very stiff and sore, so do flex and use it, gently to begin with, if it turns out to be sprained.

PinkTulips · 24/04/2007 20:30

thanks eeek.

have been doing RICE all afternoon so cold compress is back in the freezer to cool down again so will hop back on the couch again in a minute. am just taking advantage of the lill in pain the neurofen have given me to ask for some MN wisdom!

LIZS... the fact that i could hear the crunch over the noise in soft play is what has me worried!

we really need a wincing emoticon. go to a&e as soon as poss. if nothing else they will give you really good drugs! (for the pain)

PinkTulips · 24/04/2007 20:36

alas i think neurofen is already more than i should be taking while feeding ds

you will be surprised what they can offer you. i had a bizarre collection of painkillers, including a mysterious red pill, after a fairly rough section.

mistersmum · 24/04/2007 20:42

Hello Ex-physio here who used to see loads of ankles. I would get it checked out if it is still that painful and you are having trouble walking on it. Then at least you would know what is wrong with it, and it would also mean you get the right advice now which could help a great deal in the long run. Or if you don't go and if things don't settle down as you expect do go back and see someone to get it sorted. Physio could help too, in terms of regaining movement, function and strength, but depends how bad it is. Anyway good luck either way!

PinkTulips · 25/04/2007 12:47

went to a&e and it's a bad strain/sprain

it's strapped up but the cheap ass hospital didn't give me a crutch so i'm no better off than if i hadn't gone really!

LIZS · 25/04/2007 14:14

but at least you know. Any chance of NHS physio , or do you have private insurance - made a huge diffenrence to mine when it hadn't recovered naturally 6 weeks later. Worth bearing in mind.

star1976 · 25/04/2007 14:47

Oh I remember when I broke my foot a few years ago. Hurt like hell and cried myself to sleep the first night (couldn't go to hospital either cause DD was in bed).

However, on the bright side, my physio was a gorgeous irish student with THE sexiest accent EVER called Peter who spent 30 minutes a week massaging my foot whilst I giggled like a school girl! Made it almost worth it!

PinkTulips · 25/04/2007 22:02

in ireland i'm afraid so no nhs. will be back next week for a review so maybe they'll be more helpful then.

i was dead lucky with my timing though, went in and a&e was dead so got seen really fast, on the way out it was jointed, lol!

My mil walked around with a broken foot for several days so you never know. That pain sounds awful - hospital for you I think. I think you're ok with nurofen when bf. Had mastitis at Christmas - pain was agghhh - gp said nurofen was ok for a few days.
