Can't swallow!

Please can someone offer advice to me!

I've got a hiatus hernia and occasionally have a sever outbreak of acid reflux and literally can't swallow anything. Not even spit.

I'm having an attack now and obviously cannot take my night time medication. The problem then gets worse and I then end up being admitted to hospital on a drip and staying overnight. It clears and then I go about my life.

Does anyone have any experience of this and have something I can magically take that will clear this. I've tried water, renees and it's not working. I don't have any baking powder.

Please help

Poor you. Sounds awful and I wish I could help. Why can they not operate on your hiatus hernia to close the hernia?

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 01:11

It's a big op with a six week liquid diet after etc. I have very young children so it doesn't appeal

Op, l suffer occasional bouts of severe reflux, it's grim. Have you tried milk? I also take Zantac. Nothing else to suggest unfortunately, hope you get some respite soon.

BashStreetKid · 02/01/2018 01:33

Do you have any ranitidine? Can you take that?

Battleax · 02/01/2018 01:34

Milk is worth a go.

Stolenchoccies · 02/01/2018 01:35

will it continuelike this until you have the op?

whathaveiforgottentoday · 02/01/2018 01:59

Not going to help for tonight, but maybe prevent another attack. I take omprezole daily to prevent reflux as have a narrowing in my oesophagus which flares up with reflux and stops me swallowing.
It's been under control since taking omprezole continually.

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 07:43

Hi everyone
Still ongoing this morning. I take ranitidine but can't get it down.
I had a hyper sensitive reaction to Omeprazole so can't take it.
This is a nightmare

You poor thing. What will you do?

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 09:08

I think the only option is bloody a and e which sickens me! I hate using nhs resources but I've exhausted all nhs options. Gp can't help because I can't swallow.
I'm literally regurgitating all this weird foam. Need to see if I can get my mum to watch the children otherwise husband is going to have to come home from work

Ring 111 for advice, you don't need A&E. They could get you an appointment with a GP who could prescribe liquid or dissolvable meds.

You need rereferral to consultant to discuss future management.

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 11:20

I rang 111 who put me in touch with a gp who has referred me to a and e because I can't even keep liquid down long enough to work. I also phoned my own gp before I came in.
Actually sometimes people do need a and e unfortunately. I hate using resources but I've been left with no choice.
Waiting now

Oh Bless you - how awful Flowers loads of waiting now... You are in the right place though.

User843022 · 02/01/2018 12:22

'Actually sometimes people do need a and e unfortunately. I hate using resources but I've been left with no choice'
Of course people need A&E and it isn't about resources, I just meant the gp would usually have admitted you straight to a medical assessment or admissions unit if you needed it.

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 13:31

When I called the said I'd have to go through standard triage

You need to plan to have that operation and 6 week recuperation. Unattractive as it sounds at the moment you are going to keep on having these episodes otherwise. If you broke your leg you’d have to have time off.

Talk to your DH about how to manage it.

Stolenchoccies · 02/01/2018 13:47

hope it is helping?

MrsSkeffington · 02/01/2018 15:52

Back home all recovered - yes going to have it. Enough is enough

Thanks so much for all the supportive messages

Thanks for you. Glad you've been seen and helped and good luck with your operation. Whilst 6 weeks is an inconvenience you will be better!
