Blood in stools

For years I've had very heavy bleeding from my rectum. I've had several flexible sigmoidoscopies diagnosing polyps (removed( and the surgeon told me my bowel was ulcerated. I've had piles since my first child but the heavy bleeding started about 12 years after.
The gps don't seem worried, but I know if a patient presented in my ward like this they'd be concerned. Through elimination I've found I'm intolerant to wheat and dairy, the bleeding tends to follow eating certain foods. The bleeding is cyclical, following episodes of severe cramping and diarrhoea.
Should I be worried? I don't want to keep bothering the gp.

Keep badgering the GP. My sister had those symptoms and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and is now gluten-free with steroids if she has a flare-up.

I've been to my GP recently with gastro problems and he sent me for a blood test to check for coeliac, thyroid and iron levels (I'm very tired and struggling with insomnia and appetite too).

Are you a nurse?

Thank you, I will try again. I think I had the blood test for coeliac once, though I've been told that if you're avoiding the foods that trouble you then you'll fail the test.
I'm a nursing assistant, but have noticed reactions to even a teaspoon of blood. Not looking forward to more tests I have to say!

I have had this for years...... until I stopped/reduced eating wheat!

Do you continue to eat gluten like wheat, and dairy (including butter, cheese, etc.)?

becswally · 30/12/2017 12:50

Yes I'm a bit rubbish, noticed big improvements overall just cutting out bread and pasta. Bloating went, acne went and no pain etc, just need to keep cutting out stuff to see what else does it

I've googled and there are plenty of articles mention a link between gluten and IBS-like disease (like Chron's). Maybe you could cut out gluten and dairy for three weeks, eat "probiotics" pills and milk replacement suitable for possible gluten intolerance, and see if there's a change, but you must decide on it yourself -sometimes or quite often actually the web pages says one shouldn't try an "elimination diet" without the aid and supervision of a dietician, but there are posts here on Mumsnet where people have mentioned paying for (invested in) meeting with a dietist, or reading up on the topic themselves, and says this having been very beneficial for them.

If you are cutting out gluten, make sure you really push hard at it and cut out salad dressings and pre made sauces etc that use wheat as a thickener. You also have to cut out rye and barley (and oats are usually suspect as they run them on the same machinery as wheat in most processing mills)

But if you are going to have the celiac test again, you do have to be eating gluten for 4 to 6 weeks before the test so that your body is “all gluten angry” and it will show up in the blood work. If you are eating gluten at the moment, maybe get yourself the test first and then eliminate

I took this test once after hearing about it on radio, didn't know it existed. Very simple, easy. www.lloydspharmacy.com/en/selfcheck-coeliac-glucose-intolerancetest
