Cervical ectropian

Been diagnosed with this today. My doc did an examination and it's very mild but it's the cause of some mild spotting I've been having. I'm due a smear in a couple months and she said there is no need to have one now as she is 100% certain that's what it is. She says my cervix looks completely healthy otherwise and the ectropian is very very small which is why she didn't see it when I went the first time for examination.
She did do a swab test as routine.
If it gets worse bleeding wise I will be referred to colposcopy to get it cauterised.
I've also had a total blood mot done recently which came back all clear.

I just need to stop all this worrying and anxiety it's crippling Sad

I was diagnosed with this in pregnancy. I was also told it's nothing to worry about and have since had a normal smear. Try not to worry and don't Google - much information online will be inaccurate or out of date.

CurbsideProphet · 29/12/2017 18:21

I am prone to this and have had the cells cauterised twice. Apparently it's very common. It's easy for me to say, but try not to worry yourself Flowers

You still need to attend for your routine smear. Your GP can diagnose an ectropian by looking at your cervix, but not the abnormal cells that a smear detects.

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 18:25

Oh absolutely I will still have my smear test, I just meant that's why she didn't do one today

I had this. I freaked out but it really wasn't anything to worry about.

Steeley113 · 29/12/2017 18:29

I had this in pregnancy, never got it sorted out after until I had an abnormal smear, they cauterised it during my Lletz procedure so please go for your routine smear!

somethingfromnothing · 29/12/2017 18:35

I deal with the lab side of the smear tests and an ectropion is nothing to worry about at all. I also have spotting caused by ectropion so I understand the anxiety.

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 18:37

@somethingfromnothing do you think she would have done a smear test if she had any doubt? I have made the mistake of googling and there's a lot of posts about cancer being misdiagnosed as ectropian Sad

I was recently diagnosed with this as well. I had a colposcopy as a result and a few weeks later a clear smear test. They told me it was very common and nothing to worry about. Try not to google and have your smear as normal. Flowers

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 18:45

She did say that if she referred me to colposcopy they would think she was nuts as it's that small

There's no point the GP doing a smear, if it's not due for 2 months; the lab will not process it, it would be thrown in the bin (even if a day early, they are strict!)!

If the spotting becomes troublesome then I'm sure you could be referred to hospital to have it cauterised, otherwise they tend to get left alone. They are common, the pill and pregnancy can make them worse.

ApplesTheHare · 29/12/2017 18:59

I've had one cauterised to stop the spotting I was getting. Absolutely tiny procedure, nothing to worry about but I understand your anxietyFlowers

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 19:01

My hormones are pretty out of whack at the minute aswell because of other health issues and the amount of anxiety I've had because of it. Ive started antidepressants and had a lot of antibiotics in the last 4 months. I haven't eaten healthily or exercised at all!! I'm overweight aswell. I just feel like utter shit

Cervical ectropion is fairly distinctive. It looks very raw because the cells are a very thin layer hence the tendency to cause bleeding. I don’t think there’s any need to do your smear early. as someone mentioned above there are very strict policies about accepting samples early in some areas in the country although I’m in Scotland and it isn’t the case here.

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 19:21

My gp was absolutely adamant that that's what it is and even told me it is definitely not in any way shape or form cancer.

It's my health anxiety that does this to me I worry so much.

sillysausage16 that sounds really tough. It will take a while for the antidepressants to work well and your system to bounce back from the antibiotics. I always find regular fresh air helps when I'm feeling shit, especially at this time of year. Have you got anything in particular to focus on in the new year?

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 20:07

Yeah I'm going to focus on getting fit and healthy. I've had a stomach infection then a uti which I had huge doses of antibiotics for. I also have a problem with my sacroiliac joint which I'm having physio and sports massage for as the muscles have spasmed. I work in a preschool and it's due to me sitting on tiny chairs all day and lifting children.

Everything has played havoc on my body and I always think the worst hence the antidepressants!! I honestly think this is a result of all the stress and medication effecting my hormones.

I was diagnosed with this maybe six years ago, have had a baby and two normal smears since then. I think it's really not a big deal so try not to worry.

sillysausage16 · 29/12/2017 21:00

I am now focusing on the swab test my gp did routinely and worrying myself sick about that
