Definative Nappy Rash treatments please...

DD3 (11m) just broken out with horrendously painful nappyrash caused by a mildly upset tummy. We have never had proper nappy rash with any of ours before.

She is in agony at every nappy change.

What is the best treatment? Am i right in thinking Metanium is the way to go?

thin coating of sudocream or vaseline but these are barriers if it is open sores you must put something to heal i just looking to find it in my box to tell you name hold on please lol

SlightlyMadSecret · 23/04/2007 22:35

Yeah doing sudocrem barrier but she is red raw, everywhere. Worse at the front and in teh folds where poo collects...No broken skin (yet), but needs healing cream rather than barrier now.

pinkspottywellies · 23/04/2007 22:45

Kamillosan is lovely and soothing but don't know if it'll be hardcore enough for what you need!

SlightlyMadSecret · 23/04/2007 22:46

Thanks anyway...searching the archive metanium seems quite popular so I think I will give that a go.

right been on internet they suggest sudocream as it is antiseptic and barrier cream but they also mentioned caneston which i thought was for adults but they say it is brill

SlightlyMadSecret · 23/04/2007 22:49

Canestans for thrush tho as it is an antifungal. I think this is straight nappy rash. She has had a couple of 'pungent' nappies today.

yes i think you are right it was near the bottom of the site but it was mentioned so just as good if it works if not still trip to docs but think it is looking and feeling sore as you have tummy upset with it hope she gets better soon its not fun also suggest leaving nappy off but dd must be on the move all the time now ok if it a hot day you can be in garden..lol

pickledpear · 23/04/2007 22:53

canesten was higher on the list than metanium weird...

kate7 · 23/04/2007 22:55

Both my dd's have suffered with terrible nappy rash, usually while teething. Metanium is better than Sudocrem once things get to the stage you seem to be describing, but your best bet I think is to see your GP and they should prescribe a steroid based cream which sorts things out in a day or so.

SlightlyMadSecret · 23/04/2007 22:55

It is not diahrroea quality...so not too bad leaving nappy off. Could you link (or post me web address) of the site with a list please?

DS1's suffered with nappy rash really badly. I think metanium is the bast thing we've used - apply thinly and it sort of 'clings' to the open sore areas and then don't rub too hard between nappy changes. It protects it more I think.

Best thing you can do though is nappy free time - even getting her to play in the (empty) bath for half an hour if you're worried about the mess.

pickledpear · 23/04/2007 23:12

netdoctor.co.uk then go to medicines by effect; skin

it lists alsorts of causes for sore skin you click on each one and tells you what it best for

hotchocscot · 23/04/2007 23:27

Hi, when my ds had nappyrash when teething, we found Metanium much better than Sudocrem. But also got a couple of other tips from other mums that helped, first was to avoid acidic foods that made the poo acidy and more likely to hurt wee bum, so avoiding too much fruit esp apples, tomatoes etc for a few days seemed to help. also when really bad we watered down his formula a bit (150ml milk with 50 ml water) and this seemed to ease the strain on the whole digestive system and reduce the skin reaction to the poop. Hope she's feeling better soon.

flightattendant · 24/04/2007 06:19

Poor you and DD...hope the night wasn't too disturbed. Reading the thread, when DS had nappy rash for weeks that wouldn't shift, we eventually tried canesten and it went just like that. (Not always easy to tell if it's fungal - whatever's going on with her bowels it may be worth a try.
Good luck

Sugarmagnolia · 24/04/2007 08:50

Mine are out of nappies now but I always found Weleda's Calendula nappy cream was a bit of a miracle worker. Tried lots of brands and none came close.

Sugarmagnolia · 24/04/2007 08:51

Also, if weeing is making her sore try giving her lots of water to drink. It will dilute the wee nad make it less sore. That was the best advice ever when I had an infection after DD was born.

olivo · 24/04/2007 09:05

my dd has just nappy rash for the first time and we used bepanthen ointment - it worked like magic and cleared it up very quickly. its quite cheap as well.

SlightlyMadSecret · 24/04/2007 22:18

Thanks guys...the night wasn't too bad. She woke us a couple of times but fortunately settled herself.

We got some metanium (strange stuff isn't it?), and teh extent of the rash seems to have improved over the course of the day, but the areas that are affected are looking redder and redder . She also seems to tolerate being changed much better, either it is much less sore or she is getting used to it. I think it must be the former as I don't think 1y olds (b'day today BTW) can get used to pain like that was obviously causing.

Will give it a couple of days and if it is not significantly improved will try GP and/or canetesten for thrush. There are no white spots tho so I assume it is just bog standard nappy rash
