NO!

I got scared as I had to have abou four and two crowns after not having to have anything. I was SO SCARED and I posted on here and people were great and then when I went it was FINE!

The only issues are:

  1. the injection to numb you (but nowhere near as bad as you imagine)
  1. Keeping your mouth open for the treatment

AND THAT IS IT!

YOU DON'T FEEL A THING!

Sorry to sout but I was scared and as so unnecessary and want to reassure you (but shouting )

babyonboard · 23/04/2007 17:09

No!
Well..maybe for a little while and nothing as bad as childbirth..

Just take the painkillers they give you and you'll be fine. There's a gel you can buy in chemists called 'oragel' which will help numb any painful areas too. I always remember my DP after having a crown saying 'wow it's so amazing to be able to chew on both sides of my mouth now' (as a lazy student he suffered toothache for 8 months before getting it sorted!)

LIZS · 23/04/2007 17:13

Yes it might a little. The injection site(s) bruise as will any extractions (will also feel raw and fleshy for a few days). If you have to keep your jaw open for any length of time that will ache too. Have nurofen or whatever on standby for when the local wears off, just in case, but you should n't need it. Good luck

wurlywurly, my dd (10) had 13 teeth out about 6 months ago as she had too many adult teeth trying to push their way through from her jaw. And she honestly didnt complain of any 'pain' afterwards just an 'uncomfortable' feeling and the jaw aching from them keeping her mouth open for so long! Hope this is inspiration for you! Mind, she did have a general anaesthetic (sp?) so no idea of what pain if any you would experience if awake!

babyonboard · 23/04/2007 17:23

From what you said you need doing it sounds like you probably suffer regular toothaches , so just get it over and done with and it will be worth it!

wurlywurly · 23/04/2007 18:25

i'm terrified at the moment. I know I have to have the work done cos i just cant cope with the pain any more, but at the same time im scared i'm gonna be in agony after. mind dunno what is gonna hurt more having the work done or paying the bill

Also will i have to drink thru a straw after???

it didn't really hurt after - like a dull ache but nothing more - don't worry.

flightattendant · 23/04/2007 19:43

I've had so much work on my teeth it's unreal, (ruined them with bad habits several years ago.)
From my experience it's always worse before and if there is pain after for a short time when the anaesthetic wears off, it tends to be just that - short-lived. You know it'll heal up now it's been cleaned out and mended!
Saying that, do have some Ibu or similar around in case.
And bear in mind that after extractions, it is sometimes possible to have what's known as a 'dry socket' when the wound doesn't close up properly, and that hurts - you'd know about it for sure, usually within a day or two, so you'd go back and they'd sort it out. Very unusual, don't worry, I've had everything and only had that once.
Just trying to give a full picture not trying to scare you! And if you are in lots of pain after, it's important to get it checked out.
My main point is that it really is worth it having the work done. Honestly!
PS. you might have some trouble eating afterwards, but only for a few hours - also a bit of bleeding and soreness with extractions. Usually much better after a good night's sleep.
My usual problem has always been getting hungry but mouth too sore to eat properly. That's hard! Or the bleeding not stopping immediately - then you bite on a hankie for 10 mins solid, hand cupped uner chin, that should sort it. It does feel horrid when your mouth's been subject to that sort of intrusion, no getting around it, but really not for very long.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Oh it's a good idea to have stuff around you don't have to chew - yogurt or yes, something you can eat with a straw - low blood sugar can make you feel like cr*p, I usually find if I eat something, I immediately feel much more cheerful and the pain is less too. If you are starving after that sort of work, it can make you feel very low and tearful. Try and eat beforehand if you can to keep you going a bit longer.

PanicPants · 23/04/2007 19:49

I always take some paracetamol before going into the dentists,a nd then again 4 hours later to coincide with the injection wearing off, and you'll be fine!

wurlywurly · 23/04/2007 19:50

cant eat before i'm being sedated so cant eat for 6 hours before having it done and i dont fancy getting up at 5am to eat.

Oh...then my plan is a bit useless!!! Sorry I didn't think of that.
Ok well then eat as soon as you can afterwards...or drink something with energy in it. You might find that being so nervous before, you just slip into a sort of dream when you're there, having done the mental prep beforehand. I'm sure it won't be as bad as you expect.

LIZS · 23/04/2007 20:31

You can drink normally once the local has worn off and you have feeling back, otherwise you'll dribble and possibly burn yourself !

Dimpled · 23/04/2007 23:14

oh wurly - please don't worry - the aftermath is not so bad. a bit of orange juice through a straw and lots of sympathy - you'll be fine!

(I had LOADS done and opened and drank a bottle of champagne after my last trip and that was at 11 am!)

wurlywurly · 24/04/2007 16:38

am actually quite looking forward to it today maybe i'm just fed up of the pain.
