izzybiz · 23/04/2007 15:35

My Dd has the cutetest mole on her bumcheeck she got it as a baby, cant remember exactly when but i know it was before she could sit up, its evident in photos!

Moles are mostly sun damage aren't they?

suzywong · 23/04/2007 15:36

no
I think they are part of your pattern, IYSWIM

unless serenity had a sunlamp up her fanjo

NotQuiteCockney · 23/04/2007 15:37

No, moles are often totally unrelated to sun - DS1 has none, DS2 has quite a few. They've come in since he was one, I think. One is in the crease between testicles and upper thigh, so I'd be startled if it's down to sunlight .

ZoeC · 23/04/2007 15:38

Yes, aren't they just pigment marks? Dd1 hasn't any and she's 4.5, but dd2 has one already so I guess it varies. Dds's is quite high up on her leg, not somewhere that has often seen the sun tbh.

paulaplumpbottom · 23/04/2007 15:38

So what causes them

DumbledoresGirl · 23/04/2007 15:40

Two of mine have quite large ones - ds1 on his bottom and ds3 on his hand. They first appeared in babyhood - quite pale at first but gradually darkening. The dark ones that start as a pinprick appear later on - ds2 (9) has just started noticing those.

Hulababy · 23/04/2007 15:41

DD has some - she is 5yo. Noticed them more this year than last. She has loads of freckles too.

Don't think it is related to the sun. DD always has high factor on once the sun is out.

I have both moles and freckles too - so maybe just inherited???

NotQuiteCockney · 23/04/2007 15:43

What causes them . Apparently some are triggered by sunlight, some are present at birth, some appear randomly. Go figure. Genetics has to be part of it, I am covered in flat moles, DH has raised ones. DS1 has no moles, yet and is 5.5, DS2 has a sprinkling, and is 2.5.

Hulababy · 23/04/2007 15:45

What is a mole(skin marking)?

A mole or melanocytic naevus is a small, dark spot on the skin.

Moles may either be present at birth or develop later in life.

Acquired moles are a form of benign neoplasm, while congenital moles are considered a minor malformation.

Moles are most often of no medical consequence.

Most children are born with moles, and almost everyone has at least one or two moles on their bodies.

As for exposure to sun, this is still not researched:
"Some scientists suspect that overexposure to ultraviolet light (including excessive sunlight) may play a role in the formation of acquired moles, but more research is needed in this area."

Also from another page:
It is the case that moles have a strong hereditary occurrence.
