Chest infection help...! (Complicated by asthma and Addison’s)!

Any medical people about? (Yes I know I shouldn’t trust medical advice from random people on the net but I would like some opinions).

I have moderate asthma and Addison’s disease. I started to get a really nasty chest infection about 2 weeks ago. Lots of rattling noises when I cough, but when the gp listened to my chest it sounded clear as it was very low in my lungs. I didn’t have a particularly high temperature but then with addisons I take daily steroids so they tend to mask fevers anyway. I was coughing so much I actually caused myself severe back spasms that were so painful it was horrible.

The gp sent me for a chest X-ray (which was clear!) and gave me Clarithromycin - of which I have 2.5 days left. With the addisons I have been on double dose steroids for 2 weeks now (!) I am still not feeling much better. The rattle is still there and my peak flow is still quite low all the time even with the blue inhaler. I am feeling unsure as to whether the antibiotics are helping really, I don’t feel a lot different!

What would you do in this situation? Keep going until Tuesday and see the gp? Ring 111 - really don’t want to end up in a and e or anything like that unless it’s essential. Do chest infections just take an age to bugger off? Feeling a bit miserable. Sad With the asthma and Addison’s it makes things a bit more complex than it would be for most people.

(For reference I am 37, healthy generally otherwise)!

Should also add I’m allergic to penicillin hence the Clarithromycin.

I think considering you haven't got a high temperature and still got a few days of antibiotics to go, I'd wait a few more days. But I'm no doctor!

I wouldn't mess with the Addison's. It might be sensible to call 111.

Hi. My daughter has asthma and secondary Addison’s too!! She also currently has a chest inf!! Not fun!!
If your antibs haven’t worked then I’d deffo get back to see a doc. Maybe you need different antibiotics. Chest infections can linger, especially with the added asthma!! Does it feel like it’s still infection or could he be more asthma now?? That can linger for a while after a chest infection. Maybe you need pred? I’m taking it you are on hydrocortisone for the Addison’s? My daughter takes pred in addition to the hydro. This way it hits both the asthma and cortisol levels.
I hope you feel better soon. Let us know how you get on xx

I had this about a month ago, NO fun at all and I didn't have all the extra stuff you're contending with. Go back to the GP, they may give you a longer course of the antibiotics. I started off on amoxicillin but they made me sick so I then had another 5 day course of Clarithromycin which did the trick mostly.

Thank you for the replies. Bodies can be awful can’t they! I’m not sure if the infection is still there but there is a bit of a rattle when I cough.. I thought that meant there was one? I’m not sure. I upped my steroids again (hydrocortisone) yesterday and it got me through and I felt a bit better as the day went on. Think I’m going to do the same today and muddle through till Doctors reopens and then try and ask for some pred as well and maybe some extra antibiotics if they think I need them to try and knock this out of me...! Thank you.

You probably could do with going to hospital now or at least when it gets worse and be put on a nebuliser, steroids etc to clear and open up your airways and help with your oxygen levels.

If you start to feel worse then just take yourself to A&E and the professionals will sort it out for you before it gets worse.

If in any doubt pop into your A&E dont hang around waiting for your GP to open up.
