Worried: periods / frequent bleeds

Hi,

Wondered if anyone had any experience of this...

I had a period 29th Nov - 6th Dec. Normal flow (for me) although it lasted 8 days, which is long for me.

I then started bleeding again on 8th December for another 7 days. So just a 2 day gap between those periods. Again, flow was like a normal period for me.

I've now started bleeding again - only 8 days after the last one finished.

So starting my 3rd period of bleeding in a month!

I have no pain or cramps (although I never get period pains). My mood has been very up & down this month - I've generally had many periods of feeling completely stressed / overwhelmed, but then it is Christmas. I do feel hormonal.

Other things possibly relevant are: I donated blood this month. I lost about 6lbs over last 4 weeks, deliberately, by not eating crap / chocolate. I'm 33 and on the pill. Have 2 children, last baby 18 months ago. Stopped BFeeding 7 months ago. I've always had light periods & regular cycle.

I had a cervical smear booked for early December but couldn't attend due to bleeding. I've rearranged for early jan. so not had one for 3 years.

Shall I get checked sooner? Thanks. Don't want to be worried over Christmas

Oh poor you. I really sympathise because I worry so much about my health (the reason I'm up now). For me the absolute worst thing and I get it because I do it and it's sooooo tempting is to go online and ask people questions or google endlessly. I can't offer any advice but I just wanted to send you a word of support. I have no idea about periods (which is remarkable the amount of googling I've done over the years) but I just reckon anything health related is best left to your gp (and not in a dramatic way just because you can really freak yourself out online even if people say reassuring stuff). Book yourself in to the GP xxxx

Thank you cosmic, you're absolutely right. I will booked to see GP and I have a smear already booked in Jan. I just hoped someone might have experience & could off some reassurance for the time being as i won't get to see the GP for a while with it being Christmas.

Trying not to worry. I'm lucky not to have health anxiety and very rarely unwell but this has got me worried Confused.

Thanks again

Polyps perhaps? I had them in my uterus and had bleeding between periods. Found by a gynae using TVS. I know you're just looking for anecdotal options and I do the same but the only way to know of course to see a GP / specialist.

What pill are you on? When I was on the pill I was fine and had regular monthly periods that weren’t too heavy, but about a year or two later I randomly started getting crazy periods. Came off the pill and it went back to normal

Babytalkobsession · 23/12/2017 09:03

I'll take polyps. Thanks - exactly, anecdotes are helpful I think. Helpful to know there are lots of reasons for it - not just the big worrying cervical cancer one.

I'm on desogestrel, I believe it's a new name for Microgynon. Been on it a while. I do wonder if it's linked to this new version as since I've been taking it I haven't felt 'me'. Bloody hormones Smile

Could be some sort of hormonal imbalance from the pill. Maybe try a different pill if nothing shows up on your smear

Hi, I've been to the gp this week with something very similar. I'm on the mini pill and have been for 10 years. I normally have no bleeding at all, perhaps a very light bleed lasting a day or 2 a couple of times a year. About a month ago I started bleeding and it lasted for about two weeks on and off.

By the time I got to see the gp the bleeding had stopped for about a week. She was very reassuring. She said it's most likely down to the mini pill which can cause totally random and irregular bleeding even after years of no bleeding on it. I don't know what type of pill you're on but if it's a mini pill, (like Cerelle,) then this weird bleeding is very common.

The gp did a v thorough examination and said my cervix looked fine but my uterus felt slightly bulky. She emphasised that this isn't worrying, that it could be down to a fibroid or simply having a tilted uterus, (which I do have, I was told this by a midwife years ago.) She has referred me to have a scan to check things out but it'll be about six weeks as she isn't concerned about anything so it won't be rushed through.

I do suffer from health anxiety so I do feel a bit wobbly about the whole thing, but am trying to be sensible about it. The gp wasn't worried, the bleeding is v v common in the pill I'm on etc etc.

She did ask me if the bleeding started after sex, which for me it didn't. She said that was a good sign too, as cervical problems would be indicated by bleeding after sex, ( again though, that wouldn't necessarily be anything serious, could just be a polyp or something.)

I hope that helps a bit. I think what I'm trying to say is that while irregular bleeding can be sign of something serious, it is far more likely to be something very minor or just a hormonal blip.

ScarlettDarling · 23/12/2017 09:15

I've just seen your update saying you're on desogestrel. I'm pretty sure that's a progesterone only pill, i.e. A mini pill like Cerelle. It's totally different to microgynon which I think is a combined pill. If your gp has switched you from microgynon to desogestrel then I think odd bleeding would be v v common.
