Dd, 2, has a lesion on her palm. 2 gps and 2 consultant dermatologists have failed to make a diagnosis (wart/injury/mole have all been suggested). The dermatologist has now decided it needs to be removed and analised. To remove it will require a general anesthetic. This has been going on a year now ad I jsut want it sorted. I am getting in a state because a) noone knows what this lesion is, could it be something serious? b) I am worried about the GA.

Anyone else experience anything similar?

Hi Bunny. Can't help with the lesion I'm afraid - hope it turns out to be nothing.

My ds had a GA when he had his grommets in, he was 2.5. I was petrified, I think this is a normal reaction tbh.

It is hard keeping them nill by mouth as they don't understand, but the hopsital nearly always take the youngest ones down first. It will be agonising waiting untill you get your baby back, I consoled myself with the fact taht some children need life saving operations and my ds would be OK afterwards.

At that age they recover very quickly from the GA, it will be far worse for you than her!!

Good luck

than you for response. Do you know what the risks of a ga are? the gp was horrified and asked the dermatologist to reconsider but he wouldnt. Of course the gps reaction has made me even more worried!

Not sure. Can you ask the hospital?

Know there are risks, but they are tiny in comparison with how many GA's are given every day.

Hi bunny,

My DS had an unusual mole on his ear removed under GA 2 years ago aged 9.

We hummed and ha'd about GA vs local but in the end decided to go for GA as it was in such an awkward place, i.e. on his head!

I stayed with him while they put him under and cryed my eyes out once he was out. That was definitely the worst bit, but in hindsight it didn't bother him at all, only me.

It's just as well he had the GA as it took the (brilliant) plastic surgeon 40 minutes to remove it, as opposed to the original 10 minute estimate. He did a briliant job and all the nurses were lovely, especially his named nurse and the children's 'entertainer' who found him his favourite Star Wars film to watch in bed (have a pat on the back Frenchay Hospital Bristol!).

His mole was benign, thank goodness, but we all agreed at the time that it was better to get it off because they didn't know what it was.

Try not to worry too much, if it was anything serious, they would have done it by now

Good luck, BL

BL, thanks for that. I am terrified that it is a tumour of some sort, it has been there for a year now. Cant dwell on that right now though. We are seeing a Paed Dermatologist privately on Tuesday who might be able to tell us what this thing is. I just want to know now.

just quickly then bed for me...
1.GA should be very quick- u will be allowed into the anaesthetic room to hold ur child, a mask is put on their face and then they drift off to sleep. u then have to leave and the anaesth puts in the tube and i.v. line.
make sure the consultant paed anaesthetist is
there- most hosps have this policy anyway but double check.
kids recover v quickly and this is likely to be a very short procedure.
2.if it was anything nasty- it would have spread by now and extensively.meaning that its less likely to be sinister- its been there a year and i assume not altered much otherwise people wouldnt have waited so long.
Good luck.

My DS is 9 months old and had an GA at 8 months for an operation for tongue tie. Like you, I panicked (even had panic attacks) about the GA - however, like the other MNers it was fine. It will be day surgery so only surrounded by other kids having similar type stuff done, you will have a named nurse, and all the staff will be brilliant. You will be able to go down to surgery with your child and pick them up afterwards. My DS was fine for the rest of the day after the GA and a bit grizzly the day after. I had no need to worry - it went like a dream. You will get a chance to meet all the staff involved in the surgery and I found this hugely reassuring. Do tell the staff when you arrive if you feel a bit panicky - this just gives them a chance to be extra informative with you. Good luck - hope it all goes well.

greenvalley and kate. thank you so much for your messages of support. greenvalley, I tell myself it cant be anything sinister (cant say the word) as it has grown in size but doesnt resemble any google images I can find (I have googled hours over this!). It is good to read your post re it not spreading extensively. It cheers me and gives me hope. G'night.
