Does this sound like indigestion or something else?

I’m on day 3 of what feels like the worst indigestion I’ve ever had in my life. I’m in pain constantly, in every position, whether I eat or not. It’s high up in my abdomen and I’m so bloated it feels hard and tight. It runs all around my body into my back. I have never had indigestion anything like this badly before!

DH wants me to go to the doctor but they won’t have any appointments and I can’t stand the idea of ending up in OOH (which is in A&E here) over Christmas weekend, both because it will be hell on earth and because it seems absurd to go for what is probably-surely?!-just indigestion.

Anyone ever had anything like this and it turn out to be something terrible that needs a doctor, or shall I just grit my teeth?

Three days is a long time.

Have you done all the things your'd usually do to ease indigestion? (Mint tea, antacids, a poo). Are you eating normally?

For me, OOH is only going to get worse between now and 27th, on the basis I'd go today.

JohnHunter · 22/12/2017 14:06

Oh come on. You are describing constant severe pain in your abdomen. What symptom would take to A&E if that doesn't? Go!

Oscha · 22/12/2017 14:06

Yes to all those things. I took gaviscon but am thinking of trying something for IBS as I’m so crampy? You’re definitely right about OOH getting worse over the next few days. Gah. I just want someone to puncture me and let the air out 😆

Could it be gallstones/gallbladder? Sounds like the type of pain I had. I would suggest a trip to GP.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 22/12/2017 14:07

My gallbladder started off like that. Try paracetamol and/or buscopan, and see a GP between Christmas and New year?

Oscha · 22/12/2017 14:20

I just googled and it looks like gallbladder is a real possibility 😣

Gallbladder. You need to go to a and e.

Oscha · 22/12/2017 14:43

Well shit, I just called 111 and they said to go to A&E. I’ve refused an ambulance as I don’t want DD to freak out so DH is going to come back from work and drive me.

I've just had mine out Oscha. See if painkillers or antispasmodics help stave it off for now, if the pain is still bad and you feel feverish or nauseous (or vomit) then yup, A&E is not a bad idea - a nasty attack can effect the liver and pancreas.

JohnHunter · 22/12/2017 16:04

There are plenty of sources of mischief that can go on in the abdomen besides the gallbladder. Pleased to hear that you're on the way to getting checked out.

Oscha · 22/12/2017 16:41

Now at A&E and they’ve just taken bloods to check my liver 😕

How's it going OP?

TroysMammy · 22/12/2017 19:13

My 35 year old cousin had indigestion and thought it was her gall bladder playing up. It was a heart attack. A&E is where you should go.

trinity0097 · 22/12/2017 19:20

Sounds like gallbladder issue to me. Just like what I had last Xmas!

Have they done the simple Murphy’s test on you? It’s instant and just involves pressing on you a bit!

Bigthoughtswoman · 22/12/2017 19:20

Good luck ..🤞

Rachie1986 · 22/12/2017 19:28

Hope you are ok OP x

NewIdeasToday · 22/12/2017 19:33

Sounds like gallstones to me to. Suggest you phone out of hours GP. They can give you meds (eg omeprazole) that will help a lot. Then you can work with them to decide if surgery is needed. But it doesn’t have to be an emergency.

goose1964 · 22/12/2017 21:42

Sounds like gallstones,I had this type of pain with mine ,but with a change of diet and prescription painkillers I'm more or less OK until my op

Scruffette · 22/12/2017 22:23

Hope all results were good OP and you're home and feeling better by now

BillyDaveysDaughter · 22/12/2017 23:25

Just read up on Murphy's test - ha, my surgeon casually reached over, pressed under my right ribs gently until I yelped, and said "Yeah I think we'll have that out."

My pain was only average, my liver tests were normal and I had no infection, but my stone was so big it filled the gallbladder and they had to break it up inside me to get the whole thing out! I guess I was very lucky with only mild symptoms, considering my ultrasound generated a surprising rush of interest and urgency. I never saw the images and I only saw a piece of the stone! I'm 4 weeks post op and feel fine.

Anyway, how are you doing op, any news?

Oscha · 23/12/2017 06:53

Came home last night with omeprazole and cocodamol. Doctor said it’s probably my gallbladder but didn’t do a scan or anything (though did do the pressing bits of my abdomen until I screamed thing!). I’m to go back if it gets worse/doesn’t go away.

OP posts:
trinity0097 · 23/12/2017 16:55

Please do urgently go back if it’s still sore tomorrow. They delayed with mine and I ended up in horrendous pain with a gallbladder drain (bag collecting my bile to carry around) for 2 months and 4 hospital admissions within 10 weeks, one for 10 days. All because they missed the opportunity to extract it there and then.

fuckweasel · 23/12/2017 17:07

As above, please go back if it's not getting any better. My 'indigestion' was acute cholecystitis and I ended up on IV antibiotics in hospital on day five after attempting oral antibiotics (metronidazole, never again. Bleurgh). On my first trip to A&E (no OOH here) Dr thought it was gastroenteritis until he did the Murphy's test and I nearly hit the roof! Oh, and I had no history of gallbladder attacks prior to this (one gigantic gallstone was causing the problem).
