Weirdly itchy legs, only in the evenings?

Like it says in the title, I've had a couple of weeks now where my thighs are persistently itchy only in the evening time. Both legs, upper half only and only late in the day. I initially thought it was a change of product but I've been using my usual soap, laundry powders, body oil etc without any change. I've tried exfoliating a bit more for a few days, no difference. Then not exfoliating at all, no difference. It isn't enough to be actually painful but it gets to be a real nuisance and can be embarrassing if I'm out to dinner or something and need to try to secretly scratch! I am conscious of not making it a cycle so I'm "scratching" with the pads of my fingers only, not enough to perpetuate damage I would think.

It seems to happen regardless of how hot or cold I am, etc. but only in the evening and nighttime. It doesn't seem to be enough to trouble a doctor with but the weird regularity of it is starting to mess with my mind. Does any one have any ideas for causes or cures? Thanks.

I have no idea but I have this problem with my feet in the evenings and at night. It drives me nuts!!

Are you on your feet all day? Maybe it's only in the evening as that's when you've sat down for the longest. Might be circulation?

Or if you've not been on your feet all day, could it be restless leg syndrome?

Is it your skin or deeper that itches?

I have this as well. I think it could be central heating making whatever clothes you're wearing rub. i just put loads of moisturizer on.

I have had this on my shins this winter - I think any kind of itching is worse at night/evening when you are trying to relax as opposed to going about normal daily business. For me raw Shea butter has made some difference but may be acompletely different issue.. sorry not much help but I do sympathise!

Drives me mad. However if I plonk a cold bag (bag of frozen peas or similar) on my calves, the itching stops immediately.

I had this a few years ago. It started very suddenly one evening - I'd be fine all day then as soon as I settled down for the evening the itching would start. Just on my shins, nowhere else. No sign of a rash or any other symptoms. I hadn't changed washing powder or soap or anything and was generally well. I tried Eurax lotion which didn't help. Cool showers gave me temporary relief but the itching came back as soon as I dried off. I tried antihistamines with no joy. I saw a doctor who said it might be scabies (it wasn't, but I think she was stumped for anything else to suggest). I used the cream she prescribed - can't remember the name but it didn't work.

Then after about 2 months it suddenly stopped. I still have no idea what it was but I've spoken to a few people since who've had the same problem.

Sorry that wasn't very helpful - but I feel your pain. Relentless itching is like torture.

it's from winter heating being on i think? dries the air* or something. drives me mad on my lower legs.

  • I may have completely made this up but I'm sure I heard it somewhere

I get it in the winter on my shins. It seems to be a combination of central heating and wearing knee-length boots (which I do a lot). I find putting lots of moisturiser on straight after my morning shower really helps. Putting it on after the itching starts doesn't work!
