Spraine ankle getting worse

Hi,

I went over on my ankle three weeks ago, it swelled straight away. I did the usual RICE thing for a few days and the swelling and bruising went away a week or so later.

As the swelling and pain on the outside of the ankle died down I started to notice more pain on the inside of the ankle. The part where the bone sticks out on the inside is still swollen.

Anybody got any idea why this part of my ankle isnt healing and seems to be getting worse? It is painful when I move my toes upwards or move the foot to either side. It aches a lot at the end of a day at work.

Do I need to get it checked out or just be more patient? Thanks

Has it been confirmed as a sprain? Have you had an X-ray?
Sprains can take a long time to heal, but if you haven't had it checked I would do that.

Sprains can be serious, or you could have torn something.

Dd had 10 sessions of physio for a simple sprained ankle & wasn't allowed to dance for 2 months.

No I didnt get it checked, just assumed it was a normal sprain - I've had a few, this ankle is very weak. I've not had this prolonged pain on the inside before though.

call gp. either they will refer for x-ray or send you directly to fracture clinic.
good luck.

You need to get it checked. Could be a fracture or ligament tear.
You need to get those ruled out, then maybe consider getting advice/treatment from a physiotherapist.

Ime the swelling can come and go. If you can afford physio it may help it heal and keep mobile.

I'll give it a couple of days then go to the minor injuries if it's no better. Thanks for your advice

I wouldn't leave it too long, if you have a fracture or a torn ligament then it will not heal by itself and could cause more damage.

It's worth getting it checked. I had a bad sprain a couple of years ago and have only just stopped getting pain from it, and that's after going to the minor injuries clinic straightaway, physio etc.

The nurse said that sometimes a break is better than a sprain as bone heals faster than overstretched ligaments/tendons etc.

I had a severe sprain that ripped two pieces of bone apart one on the top of my foot and the other a bit of my heel bone. So sprains are not always innocent! Four years later I still need a stick to walk any distance!
