DD has injured herself again; A&E???

I have just been getting washed and dressed in the ensuite and DD (2y 3m), as normal, was watching Tv in the bedroom whilst I did it. Heard a massive crash and DD scream. She has gone and pulled the chest of drawers over onto her self. Luckily they were stopped by the bed but she has hurt her hands/fingers. Two fingers are cut and bleeding, not much and her hand is now red and hot. Doesn't look swollen though and she is not crying with pain, etc. She can move her fingers if I do it for her IYSWIM but she wpn't do it on her own willingly. But she also doesn't scream out in pain if I move them, just complains about it.

Can't get in touch with Dh at the monet so not sure what to do for the best. Do you reckon that is it or should I have her hand checked out at A&E?

And how can I stop this chain of accidents???

don't worry hulababy, accidents happen to us all and unfortunately there's not a great deal you can do to stop them - have you thought about ringing NHS direct 0845 4647? Hope she's ok soon lmbx

Bloomin heck hulababy!
Your dd is the queen of accidents at the moment!

I'd put something from the freezer on it and take her to the gps or phone gps for advice.

Poor dd!

Hulababy · 23/07/2004 10:41

I have tried putting ice pack on but she refuses it. She won't move her hand or fingers at all and now won't let me near to try either.

I have no idea how she managed this one. Our house is so child friendly!!! Even I would struggle to pull the chest of drawers over. I can only assume she climbed to get to my jewellry box or to turn TV over???

I think I want to go back to work again. I have another 6 weeks of no work and no nursery to go. This si the first week!!!

i think i'd leave it for an hour or so. invlove her with something else and wouldn't mention it. see how she gets on and if she mentions it. ime the more you make of it the more they make of it. if you give out the message that you're not expecting it to hurt any longer then it won't (unless it really does). cor, what a lot of waffle, do you know what i mean?

katzguk · 23/07/2004 10:51

why not ring and see how busy a and e are, see how long you might have to wait, its only up the road and it would pt your mind at rest

Hulababy · 23/07/2004 11:04

She is still crying with this every so often, evn when I have distracted her. I think I will walk up to A&E. It is only a 5 minute walk max. I think it'd put my mind at rest at least.

Let us know how she is.

mummysurfer · 23/07/2004 11:10

poor you and dd
hope all is well when you get there

Chandra · 23/07/2004 11:36

Hulababy, I think I would take her to keep my mind at ease, I think I wouldn't take her unless is absolutely necessary as 2 bad accidents in a week may trigger the "child abuse alert" (I hate to say this but I have had already an episode of heavy questioning, and obvously I was very offended!)

suedonim · 23/07/2004 13:03

Oh, no, not again, Hulababy! You'll be glad to see the back of this week, I'm sure. I probably wouldn't take her to A&E just yet but then I'm 20 miles away not five mins walk. I hope you're both okay by now.

Just to cheer you up it was my dd's turn for an accident on Weds. She had some sort of bizarre accident on her friend's swing frame and bashed her head and eye. It was very swollen and red when I first saw it but with arnica cream and tablets it had gone down amazingly by next morning and today is almost invisible. Trouble is, dd seems to be addicted to the tablets and keeps asking for more of them!!

Hi all. Thanks for all advise, etc.

All is fine A&E was great - there was only one other child before us so we were in and out within about 15 minutes maximum :thumbsup Advantages of having a specialised children's A&E I guess - also only a 5 minute walk away. Her fingers are just sore and bruised by the looks of it. She has had paracetamol for the pain but doctors says they know only x-ray if it looks really bad as it just causes little one's more stress. At worse it'll be a chipped bone but that shouldn't be a problem either if left.

Been into town since, had picnic in the Peace Gardens, let her have a splash and run about in the fountains. She got throughly wet in her tee shirt and pants but loved it. Luckily has spares with me. She is now in bed, having a nap.

I am having a well earned sit down and cuppa :D

Chandra - I did wonder that about the other accident - went to GP with that one, not A&E. They did ask me about it as she still has the bruises but not heavy handed or anything. I am not too concerned though as my friend was with me when the first accident happened as we were out and about at a fun park. But it did cross my mind too.
