Anyone have tinnitus.? If so, how long and how do you manage it ?

I've had it for a few years. It doesn't bother me any more but I found it hellish to start with. How long have you had it? The trick is to not listen to it but it takes a while to get to that stage. Your brain in the end gets bored of it and tunes it out. I still have a pillow speaker at night because it's harder to time it out in the quiet.

I've had in stereo for as long as I can remember. It's like electrical static, that high pitched whining you get from old, untuned radios or TVs.

If I concentrate, I realise it's there. But you will eventually tune it out.
I have music on low when it's particularly annoying.

I've had it since my hearing started to really deteriorate when I was 30 ( so 13 yrs). I can't use a pillow speaker because I'm too drag when I take it my hearing aids at night!

I've only had one panicy night in all that time though. For me it is worse straight after exercise but generally speaking in not too bothered by it - it is loud and constant though. I decided to try to just accept it.

Are you suffering, OP?

Glittermud · 16/12/2017 21:35

OP, i had very bad tinnitus when i was severely anaemic - have you been tested? It disappeared when i started iron tablets and only comes bxk if i forget to take them for a bit.

Thanks for the replays. Yes. I am suffering with it. That is what mine sounds like Personalclown. - electric buzzing cables. I am trying to ignore it like many of you suggest but finding it hard to. I just want some piece and quiet !!

Go get a blood test, you might need folic acid tablets

I do. Had it 8 years, was mild at first then got louder. Mine is several different pitch rings, both ears, 24/7. Certain things can exacerbate it (caffeine, alcohol, medication, lack of sleep, illness, loud noisy places etc) so avoiding triggers is essential.

It's very difficult I won't lie but I kind of habituated to it after a few years. I could never sleep in a silent room though. I always have noise on - I use a fan, white noise cds, or apps during the night. I keep the tv or radio on as well during the day (I use the PS4 for tv stuff, makes a nice extra white noise hum) people talking or music provides extra distraction. At night it can be more of a struggle even with the white noise, so I will put either calming music or a tv show/documentary on my iPad with earphones in (I don't watch the screen) and have learned to drift of to that. It's much more preferable than trying to pretend I'm ignoring the noise.

People really underestimate how debilitating it can be.

Sorry you are struggling op but you can find coping strategies. Don't lose heart. What do you currently do to manage it? How long have you had it, did anything specific trigger it? I know of people who had it only temporarily, for example one woman had it after a head injury from a car accident. After a year it went away. As with a pp, sometimes there is a cause that can be treated too. Have you tried anything or had any tests? Mine is from noise damage - too many years in noisy nightclubs, loud concerts, and wearing earphones with music too loud! I am really hopeful about stem cell research. (I'm very protective of my daughters ears now and when she grows up I will be instructing her to wear ear plugs and keep her music at a reasonable level.)

Bucky, I'm not sure what triggered it but have had it now for a couple of years. Prior to it being there permanently I was aware of it at night after a night club/ alcohol but then it would be gone in the morning. I also had a short period of 6 months where I was on antidepressants and I understand that these can cause tinnitus but I didn't notice the tinnitus until I had come off them about 4 months later. So I am not really convinced. I also have some high frequency hearing loss and have some hearing aids and these do help a bit because they bring the background noise up. It also may have coincided with the onset of the menopause. ?? . I guess I need to start getting used to it rather than waiting for it to go away!! I will look into the anemic thing but don't have any other symptoms for this. Thanks everyone
