My wee DS2 has chickenpox (DS1 had it 2/52 ago). He is miserable. Calamine not much help. Head and face quite covered with spots and are now really bothering him he can't sleep and has no co-ordination to itch which seems to frustrate him. Anyone got any suggestions that might help him!

Bicarb in his baths as its very soothing. Neem oil and sandalwood oil are very good too.

zephyrcat · 21/04/2007 15:54

Poor little thing! My 3 have it at the moment and we're swearing by a little bicarb in the bath along with porrige oats in a muslin. Aqueous calamine cream is better than the lotion, I find. Try and keep him cool as they will itch more if he gets warm or sweaty when he's asleep.

hairycaterpillar · 21/04/2007 15:55

thought about bicarb but seems to be the spots on his head and face that bother him most. Where would I get oils from and how do you use them?

Ah bless. DS2 had it a 9 weeks and was plastered, heartbreaking it was.
Keep him stripped off as if too warm makes itching worse.
Cool flannels. Can't remember is he too young for anti histamine?
We were told to give him calpol, to help keep cool.

zephyrcat · 21/04/2007 16:07

I think too young for anti-histamine. Piriton is for 1 year and over. If you can get the cream it's working wonders on dd.

hairycaterpillar · 21/04/2007 16:07

It is sooo heartbreaking as i feel so useless, he doesnt want put down - rubs head frantically on sheets and seems uncomfortable being held...and then my DS1 and DD want some attention too!

Too young for anti-histamine, it worked a treat for DS1 though.

I remeber sitting with ds2 on my lap , he was stripped off - couldn't even put a nappy on him, lying on a towel to catch wee and poo.
Sat with him like that all day, luckily DH was day off and sorted DS1 out.
Chicken pox is the pits.
They vaccinate in Austrlalia wish they did here.

hairycaterpillar · 21/04/2007 16:13

DH has thankfully just taken DS1 and DD off to the park. I might take a walk to the local chemist and see about calamine cream. Maybe he'll even drop off in the pram.

You can get neem oil and sandalwood from good chemists.
I'll text melsy who comes on MN and ask her as her dd has got the pox atm and shes been using the oils.

Piriton should only be used when the spots have all come out as they can actually stop them developing, therefore prolonging the time they have it.

been sitting with dd2 8mo old on my lap whole day, poor girl can't tell me what's bothering her most. dd1 is getting bored as well...
she has one underneath her eye and she keeps rubbing it, can't put anything on it

hairycaterpillar · 21/04/2007 16:44

ok back from chemist...no oils (but might get DH to nip to tesco later to try their chemist) got tub of calamine cream will give that a go. He dropped off eventually in pram but has woken now the motion has stopped...argghh could be a fun night ahead!

madness - my DS2 also has one under his R eye where the lashes are, it seems to be bothering him alot...not that he can tell me but he's rubbing it alot.

Make sure he's wearing those little mitts just incase he does manage to scratch himself.

Dd1 was 9 weeks when she had it and obviously we were still photographing her every 5 mins being our PFB so we have loads of her whited up with calamine! She looks so pathetic - poor baby.

Hope yours is better soon.
