Vitamin D low - thoughts?

Hello!

I've been prescribed 100,000 IU of Vit D per week for 6 weeks then 2000IU daily for 6 months.

Has anyone else done a similar course and did it make you feel any different?

I'm 30, generally a knackered, cold and achey person but I thought that was just adulthood!

Did your energy levels go up at all? I'd love to be a bit more energetic after work - I often skip my exercise classes because I'm so tired.

Any input appreciated!

Yes.
I was so exhausted that I had to have 2 naps a day just to think and function!
I was also anaemic so I took Feraglobin (iron & vits) along with the Vit D.
It did improve my energy levels but I also had horrific periods and had an endometrial ablation to stop bleeding so not sire my improvement was entirely on the improved vitamin levels.

Yes. I had amazingly low levels. I definitely felt better within a couple of weeks. Less tired and rundown.

Good luck!

Yes I have a severe vit d deficiency, I now take a daily vit d supplement plus I take a vit b12 supplement too - they normally run side by side on deficiency - your body can store neither so you cannot overdose on them. The difference in my energy levels & mental coherence was marked yet my GP told me my b12 levels were fine when tested but my symptoms all suggested a b12 deficiency along with vit d. Once I started taking both of these btw I was able to stop taking my anti depressants for PND - the symptoms for both are very similar...

I felt tired and CBA for a year after an op. Six weeks on vit D, and I felt Smile and my joint aches went.

That's so good to know!

I take vit D 1000 daily and it does seem to help with tiredness. However I also take coenzyme Q10 which does the same so can't tell how much each contributes.

I was prescribed it along with ferrous fumerate for hair loss. Both levels were very low esp the vitamin D. After a few months I had less aching/pain in my shins and generally was less achey. It took a year or so for my hair to see the benefits but it did stop falling out and breaking. I still take both supplements and feel they help. Though I have a collagen disorder that causes pain anyhow so it is a bit hard to judge there but certainly hair and skin improvement.

I did a similar course of vit D and it made such a massive difference to my energy levels and my joints no longer aches after a few weeks. In fact I now rave about vit D to everyone! I take 20,000 every other day now and I’m just going to continue taking this dose permanently as it definitely works.

Any recommendations as to which vit D supplements to buy as DH has also been diagnosed with low vit d

Twoweekcruise · 13/12/2017 20:11

Did you all have your vitamin d levels checked through your Gp? I asked my gp to check my levels as I am always cold, achy, miserable and knackered. He told me that they don't check vit d on the NHS and that it recommends everyone take a supplement in the winter as we are all deficient?! I'm loathed to take supplements for the sake of it as I have Ibs and don't want to make things worse. I've since changed gp and am going to ask them if I can be checked.

Thisnamechanger · 13/12/2017 20:30

My GP did full bloods because I have a constant pain in my side an no one knows what it is. She said the vit d will have nothing to do with the pain but she'd treat it since she noticed it.

It is a struggle to get it tested on the nhs

But there is a reasonable private one you can do (can't remember how much we paid £27?£35? Sorry)

The high dose (25ug/1000 iu) from the supermarket are fine.

You can get sprays that you use under your tongue that some people prefer. They are supposed to be better but I found it did not work for me.

You might find that some magnesium and some K2 with it will help.

Gorja · 13/12/2017 20:37

I take 10000 daily prescribed by my Gp. Been on it for about eight months.
I was coming home from work and crying with the pain in my legs - was pain in the bones not just an ache. Within a month of starting the vit d it had all gone away, it was bliss.
I have tried to reduce the dose on the advice of the gp but the pain returns really quickly and my levels drop to non-existent so I am on the higher dose for life!
