Hit my head- should I worry?

So like a complete idiot, I went tobogganing on a sizeable hill this afternoon. I managed to somehow accidentally come off the sledge backwards and hit the ground with some force as I'd gathered speed and I was nearing the bottom of the hill. In the fall, I whacked the base of my skull off the ground- that was about 4pm ( 6 hours ago).

I felt ok at the time, not dizzy or anything like that. Now however, I have a throbbing sort of headache which gets much much worse if I try to move, especially if I bend down. I haven't taken anything but my worry is that the pain has moved to the front/side on my left rather than the back. Should I bother getting this seen to if it doesn't go away tomorrow?

Go and get checked out now. Don't mess about with head injuries. It might be nothing, but it might be a concussion. It might even be more serious. Get to A&E now!

You need to hit certain targets to get a CT scan. These include vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness and amnesia. You’d expect to have a headache if you’ve hit your head. Take some paracetamol and ibuprofen before you decide you need to A&E to sit for 6 hours to be seen.

Ring the NHS helpline and describe your symptoms. They'll probably tell you self care and monitor the situation atm but may advise you to get yourself checked. Regardless, if you continue to deteriorate you will absolutely need to get yourself seen to. Take care OP.

Thank you everyone. I don't think I can ring up 111 as I am outside England. My main idea is just to take a painkilller and sleep it off.

I would anticipate 111 saying you need to be checked out properly in A&E. At least, they will if they're following NICE guidance, based on the mechanism of injury, and the persistence of the headache.

Headache worse on bending over is really quite worrying.

I'm not convinced that you hit CT scan criteria yet, but it does sound like you need face to face assessment.

You may well be fine, but this is not worth taking the risk over.

Jamboree05 · 09/12/2017 23:56

OP, in which case, if you can't ring 111, I would go to get yourself checked. It's really not worth the risk.

Glad to report the headache has gone this morning. Neck is pretty sore though. No more tobogganing for me!

DP had an accident where he hit his head pretty badly recently. He did not vomit, had no seizures or loss of consciousness. He still had a CT scan.

ginger, well he shouldn’t have had one. www.nice.org.uk/Guidance/CG176

Nice guidelines. hahaha

I have a child with ASD and mental health issues and I can assure you that nobody give two hoots about Nice guidelines! They aren't even worth the paper the are printed on Hmm

luckily for DP, for once they took a more proactive approach than Nice stipulates.

So long as you are happy with the consequences of unnecessary radiation.

I don't think it is right to make such sweeping statements when you don't have the details. The scan most probably saved his life.

Ditto to you about NICE.
