I have been on the mini pill for about a yr and half.

Ran out of pills, and decided to come off it for various reasons.

In the last two weeks, i have been feeling bloated, and my back and pelvis hurts again, I had spd in pg five yrs ago, and had seen a huge improvement the last year, in the pain.

I put the improvement down to the fact that time was healing the SpD.

Untill I came off the pill, it didnt even occur to me that maybe the pill had stabilised my hormone.

Does anyone have exp of a return of the spd, when coming off the pill. There is so little information about this area of SpD.

Isn't it strange, how also I can almost feel the mechanics of my body starting up, now i am pill free. Dont like it tho, but will give it a couple of cycles.

No idea I'm afraid (sorry!) just bumping. I had spd when pregnant with dd and it's much better but has never quite gone away so watching this thread with interest.

pirategirl · 20/04/2007 12:02

thanks, i would love feedback, as spd is so unheard of, well 6 yrs ago it was, better coverage now.

my gp had no idea. miserable pg.

just wondering if the pill makes things even out a bit, cos i know that periods make spd worse with me, all the dragging feelings etc..
thanks for your bump!

When I was hesitant to pump more hormones into my SPD riddled body, after DD's birth, my GP told me that the pill would stabalise my hormones. I'm not on the mini-pill though, I'm on Microgynon, and it does seems to be working. I still get sore for a week or so around my period, but for most of the month I'm a lot better. HTH.

CarGirl · 20/04/2007 12:08

I occaisionally get twinges and am on the mirena (since dd was 5 weeks old) which hasn't completely stopped my bleeding so I am thinking it probably is still cyclical when the twinges happen.

Sorry for bumping as well. I am not on the pill or planning to go on it but I did have SPD quite badly (on crutches from 30 weeks). My dd is now 9 months and I still get pain when I do anything "high impact" even walking fast.

So interestng that others still getting the symptoms. I was assured it would go after the baby was born but although its got much better its still there. Interesting that the pill helps.

My GP had never even heard of it and I swear he thinks I was making the condition up. So annoying! Wondering if it will ever go and what will happen if I get pg again..

pirategirl · 20/04/2007 23:02

hi, this is really interseting and annoying too, why oh why dont gp's even know about this condition.

Seems like we have to self medicate, and make up our own mins about what is good for the spd, in many cases. Interesting that your gp-- lilred, said it would help.
I have only put two and tow together now that i have come off the pill.
The mininpill i wason was cos i smoked, and was a newsih minipill, that was more effective than the traditional ones, ie you do have a larger time slot to take it before being at risk. The great thing too was that you take it everyday, no break so i haven't had any problems wish pre menstrual twinges.

I shall give it a couple of cycles and see how it effects me.

If the spd comes back, i shall prob go back on it.

I'm so glad to hear people's responses to this. I have mild hypermobility which has only ever been referred to in passing by doctors as being of minor interest but then I had SPD in the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy, I was in so much pain I couldn't eat, sleep, walk etc... My DD was born 8 weeks premature and although I'm told SPD doesn't affect the baby I'm certain that the physical effects on my body (exhausted, run down, malnourished, depressed) had a hand in the spontaneous rupture of my membranes. I think my body just said enough's enough; this baby will be safer out than in. After spending 6 weeks in NICU I'm pleaseed to say she had no lasting effects of the prematurity. Despite telling those involved in my delivery that I had SPD the desperation of the situation surrounding her birth meant they had to delivery her quickly with forceps...something I knew was bad news if you had SPD. But her life was at stake so there was no time to question it.

However...it's been over 2 years since I gave birth and still suffer moderate amounts of pain with SPD. I was referred to a physio, told to take ibuprofen 3 times a day indefinitely and to use an ice pack between my legs 3 times a day for 20 minutes as well as physical manipulation and exercises. I'm sorry to say these didn't really help and with my work committments I was told things wouldn't improve unless I took it easy (impossible in my job). So I've struggled on, hoping that things would eventually right themselves.

Recently my husband and I have decided to extend our family and although I'm extremely apprehensive he reassures me of his support. I came off the pill two weeks ago and in the last two days my pelvis is on fire I can hardly walk. I'm petrified that if I start a pregnancy when things are obviously not healed then they will only get far worse I've been trying to research whether there are any links between the pill and SPD and so far everything I've read suggested not. At least hearing other people experiencing the same thing is helping me understand what might be going on with my body.

Thank you to everyone for your helpful comments above and if anyone has any advice or a similar story I'd love to hear from you.

It is really interesting I stumbled upon this thread. I had my daughter 5 years ago my SPD only flared up at seven months pregnant. At that point midwives put it down to "normal pregnancy" twinges. After a very painful latent labour at home and full labour in the hospital. Due to the SPD and the hospital using stirrups and ventouse delivery!
After the birth tremendous pain developed and I was given morphine on one occasion it was that bad! I was in hospital 6 days released from the hospital after numerous catalogue of errors! Mainly unable to walk or mobilise at all. To get upstairs/downstairs i had to sit and shuffle even with my daughter in my arms! And after that was rushed into hospital a month after my daughter was born as I had developed a UTI put on antibiotics and hopitalised for a further 6 days.
I was put back on the contraceptive pill to regulate my periods which has worked. At that time I only would experience small bouts of pain week before my periods would which was manageable. I have come off the pill completely as I was gaining weight. my periods are still regular, no further weight gain but my SPD has come back with a vengeance which is why I am up at this crazy hour researching before I go to my GP! I was beginning to think it was me going mad but quite clearly if others have had the same then it can't be so thanks ladies!!

I had SPD while pregnant 2 years ago. DD was breech so luckily I had an elective C- I wonder if a normal delivery would have made things worse. I have had some hip and lower back pain ever since. Then about 2 months ago I twisted getting out of the car and hurt my hip- could hardly walk. After seeing my GP it was clear that there were major issues with my hips and lower back. She referred me for physio (which is subsidised here in NZ). I had 4 or 5 sessions over a few weeks and was given exercises to strengthen my 'core'. They have made a huge difference and I wish I'd done them earlier. So worth asking your GP's. I wish I hadn't ignored it all for so long.

Mmm, I started looking for this info incase it was the other way (that the pill might be making the SPD worse). Third baby (daughter) is nearly 10 months, and pains ongoing. Went to the physio today - good to hear it might work littlestkiwi. My older two kids are Kiwis (Wgtn born) :)

HarrietJones · 03/11/2011 19:33

I'm on the pill & still suffering with SPD. I improved but there's times ( like today) I really could do with my crutches back.
