Has anyone or do you know anyone who has had a stent fitted into the Aorta?

My dad was having tests for angina over the last few weeks as he has been experiencing chest pain, pain in his arm, breathlessness and tiresdness.
On Monday the pain got too much and he was admitted to hospital. He has had an angiogram today and they discovered that both main arteries had narrowed significantly and they have made a decision to fit a stent into each one. He's being transfered to a different hospital at some point over the next few days to have it done.

What I want to know is if anyone has had it done or knows anyone who has, how they are now?
My dad is only 49 and sadly this is all hereditory but he is such an active man. He has always played football, done runs, jogged, cycles to work everyday and walks alot.
I know he's worried about how this will affect him and I know me and my mum are too.

my mam had one fitted after she was diagnosed with lung cancer aged 45.it was a godsend for her, although she only had it for 4 months and then she died it gave her 4 months of being able to breath easily and without pain.

I think this is what MIL had put in some years ago. She was in her 50's and reasonably active but quite overweight.
She was fine afterwards, and it is only recently, about 10 yrs on, that she has had problems again. She has had to have them re done as her srtereies had narrowed again. This time round she hasn't been nearly as comfortable, as her wound din't heal and varuous othet things. She si USA though.

So they do make a difference then.
Sorry to hear about your mum ash.

Is that the norm to have them re-done? I did wonder about that.

My dad had this a couple of years ago and he was 50 at the time - he only went to the docs because he felt a bit dizzy at the gym and they did his blood pressure and sent him to the hospital with a suspected heart attack, it wasn't but he had an angiogram and one of his arteries was about 90% blocked - not sure if its hertitary as both my grandparents are dead and his older brother is fine

The op was really straight forward, the main risk was excessive bleeding as they insert it through the artery in your leg (well thats how dad had it) but he was fine

He found the rest period after really hard to deal with and it got him down the amount of meds he was on as he went from being really fit to being told not to drive or exercise - he also cried after the op (of only ever seen my dad cry 3 times in my life) so i know how scarey he found the whole thing

the british heart foundation website is fantastic - loads of support and information about the op itself (and even details of companies that will still give you travel insurance!) I'd really reccomend that you all check it out

Two years on he is fit and well - back at the gym and has trained as a comunity first responder (like a comunity police office but with the ambulance service) and hasn't had any further problems

hope that helps and that your dad it on the mend soon x

Nbg - sorry to hear about your dad, just wanted to let you know that the stents make a big difference, but stents only last up to about 15 years, by then they need replacing. But as your dad is so young, he will still be young enough in 15 years time to have the op again, so that is a big plus. (Some people have difficulties when they get stents when they are slightly older as, when the stents need replacing they have got too old to risk the op being repeated.)

I hope the op all goes smoothly for your dad, and that you see him back to his former self soon (except any life changes like diet and exercise added in).

Oh wow thats great!

My dad is very very scared and has been for a few weeks now.
Brilliant to hear your dad is up and doing things again.
I'll also let my mum know about the BHF site for the travel insurance as they are due to go away in the summer.
