hi as your all very wise on here especially about jabs thought you might be able to help me.ds is 7 months old and due to have his final triple tomorrow, ive actually cancelled his appointments the last two times but feel i need to ask advice before i give him it or not.
10-12 days after his first dose he had to spend anight in hospital with broncholitis ,the nurse at the walk in centre asked if hed had his jab recently but said 10 days after meant it wasnt a reaction.he got over the broncholitis well ,he was pescribed an inhaler but after a few weeks on the advice of my hv we stopped it as he was fine.after his second jab yet again 10-12 days later he developed a really nasty chest infection and the only reason he wasnt hospitalised was my gp felt after the broncholitis i could manage ok on my own with him, when i went to get his script from the chemist the chemist asked if hed recently had his jabs, this already had me wondering and to have him ask (hes my gps brother)fuelled my fire.since then he has had no problems whatsoever apart from the odd sniffle picked up from dd whos at playschool or being off because of his teeth coming through.
have mentioned it to hv but she says its just coincidence and gp says same ,but my gut instinct says it isnt that hes having a reaction to something.to be honest i really dont want him to have it but after having a note put on my dds records stating i DIDNT want her to have the mmr my gp gave it anyway,i thought she was just getting the other bit of her preschool booster until i saw they given her that as well,so i dont have a great deal of confidence with my gp over vacinations,i must add though with all other kids stuff hes been great.

so the question is do i go with my gut instinct see my hv before i have ds appointment tomorrow and argue my right if i have to or just do it and hope it was a coincidence.i do know though ds will definantley NOT be having the mmr.
thanks if you got this far and thanks in advance if you can help..

hi not an expert and these things are v. personal but I would do it. he has been through the first 2 and it would be a shame not to get the protection after everything. good luck with whatever you decide.

Angeliz · 22/07/2004 11:42

I'm no expert but if i were you, i wouldn't get it done until you were re-assured at least that this was a coincidence.
I can totally see how you think not as others saying "has he had his jabs" then denying it's anything to do with that seems a bit strange!

I hope you get someone more knowledgable like Jimjams later!

DISGRACE about your dd too!!!

Hi karenanne. I'm really sorry to hear about your dilemma. We're going through a vaccination conundrum at the mo too.

I tend to err on your side that there could be a relationship, however, he won't obtain full protection (or 90% immunity etc that jabs give) until he receives the full course. I guess it's a toss up between what level of protection you want him to have through vaccination (he will have some now even though he's only had two courses, but not near the 90%) and how hard these previous illnesses have effected him iyswim. Very difficult choice. I can't give any advice on either way as my ds hasn't received any vaccinations so far (but we are trying to!). As you say there are some wise people on MN and hopefully they can help you make a decision. hugs

I will make them swear they will investigate a possible link between the 2 if things go wrong again before accepting the next booster.

DS has had strange reactions to most of his vaccines including last Hib booster when he had a 40-41 degrees fever for a week long (they told us it may have been possible teething).

I decided to go for sep vax instead of MMR because I was sure that if he reacted badly again they would completely ignore me while if I said that he had reacted badly to a separate vacine they will be damn quick to investigate. I don't trust NHS any longer sorry..

Jimjams · 22/07/2004 12:01

Well I've gone with gut instinct on ds2 (after having an autistic ds1) and he's had no jabs at all. Gut instinct is hard to go against.

Another option would be to look into having the DTaP rather the DTwP as the 3rd jab. it does reduce the number of side effects due to pertussis and although I have no idea whether broncholitis is a recognised side effect of pertussis it wouldn't seem that unlikely. Maybe search for that - if it is you may feel happier giving DtaP.

Your decision though, not the doctor's etc - so go with whatever you feel happiest wth. You're the one who has to live with the decision at the end of the day.

thanks for your replies think i will go to surgery earlier than appointment and have another word with hv shes usually very good so hopefully if i show im really concerned about this she may help me with the doctor.im very aware of my gut instinct in all of my life but especially where it concerns my children and this is really bothering me.
jim jams does the DTaP jab have to be ordered specially or do they have it in the surgery.i would presume in my non medical way that its probably the whooping cough vaccine thats affecting him as its affecting his chest ?
anyway as i said thanks again

they should have dtap at the surgery as it's the one used for the pre-school booster.
You might have to fight a bit to get it though,(or maybe not if you insist that your son had an adverse reation to the dtwp).
Twiglett has a thread at the moment about trying to get the Infanrix dtap for her baby as it's also mercury free.

LittleMissScatterbrain · 23/07/2004 19:37

Diptheria also affects the respiratory system I believe. Not sure if it would initiate bronchiolitis though.. May have a search myself about this one...

(karen99 here, just changed my talk name)
