Anyone with longer term issues after Gallbladder removal? - back to gp next week

I'm just over 5 weeks post op. All ok from op itself. Incisions seem to have healed fine etc.

But I've been left with two things:

  • Significant digestive issues. Sorry for TMI ! Started as awful constipation. Increased water/ started prune juice etc but needed various laxatives and settled on movicol for 3 weeks. Trying to manage without it now but alternating between constipation/ upset stomach etc. Feel uncomfortable most of the time and making things tricky at work. Stomach feel very 'sore' and burning.
  • Dull ache under right ribs (in area where gallbladder was.) Most days. Feels very similar to the discomfort I had before the op.

Ive booked an appointment to see GP next week when I'll be 6 weeks post op but just wondered if anyone else had similar issues after getting over the initial op. Did things settle or did you need to deal with it longer term? Thanks

Well the ox bile and digestive enzymes didn't really help much, stopped taking them now, the sea buckthorn helped with the dry eyes, but I see that as a plaster over a wound, I need to fix what's causing the wound, ie. not absorbing essential fats,
dry burning eyes and dry 'chicken' skin on legs and backs of arms an on going issue, weak and thin finger nails too, worried sick now tbh.

Sorry it didn’t work snowfire.
I’m about 16 months on from op now and still have sig side pain and so uncomfortable wearing bra for work and digestive issues.
After 16 months I’m not optimistic that will improve.

Sorry to hear that too dahliaaa, it really is depressing, we seem to be among the unlucky bunch, I read so much of people who have had the gallbladder removed and can eat what they like and feel no different or even better than before, I am worried sick, I tend to worry over things anyway but this is different, my dry burning eyes are a constant reminder, not to mention the occasional bathroom emergency, bad smells following anything at all fatty consumed and the dreadful chicken skin syndrome, I hope to God this improves, I am having suicidal thoughts over it, just fleeting ones but I seem to thinking about death a lot and what point there is to life anymore,

I wouldn't ever do anything to harm myself but the thoughts of death are popping up from time to time, partner is getting fed up with me and my moods now, I suppose it's hard for other people to understand why I am so worried.

snowfire you should definitely go back to your gp to talk through your concerns if it is having such a big impact on your anxiety. Anxiety is a horrible thing.
Also if you can try and stay from google - I know it’s difficult if you are trying to find a solution but honestly it’s not very helpful.
The other option is to make an appointment with a local registered nutritionist as they will be able to advise on suitable vitamins / extra nutrients.

Thanks again dahliaaa, I have been prescribed xanax which at least knocks me out so as I can sleep, but I wake up with the same dry burning eyes, brittle nails and chicken skin, then of course there's the daily worry with diarrhoea, hoping to God things improve.

Hi all, hope you're OK.
I'm 9 days post op and finding this thread really helpful. 1st week I was surprisingly well, ate normal, normal bowel movements and even went to a school thing with the kids.
Yesterday I stupidly had some peanut butter on rye bread and all hell broke lose. Pain like gallstone attack, lasted for hours, DH called an ambulance and it was reassuring my vitals were fine. Then I was violently sick, very painful. Managed to sleep and today I feel like someone's jumped on my tummy, pain comes and goes, similar to when I had appendicitis.
Ugh!

Can I suggest anybody suffering the bile diarrhoea that you go toHolland and Barrett's and get the calcium tablets with vit d. Not the magnesium ones.

This will help clear up the diarrhoea.
