Nits in thick coarse hair, help!

My daughter has nits. We are combing them out with conditioner & nitty gritty etc no problem as her hair is fine and short.

The problem is me. I have nits Sad I also have long, thick, crazily coarse hair (some strands as thick as a cello string). I wet about an inch of hair, coated it in conditioner, tried the NG and tore my hair right out.

Please please what can I do? Is it true the lotions don't work? I feel it will be utterly impossible to get the NG through my hair, it would take days and rip my hair to shreds.

If I straighten it the best I can will I fry the little shits? I am massively upset because I just don't know how I can tackle this. Basically I now think I will have nits forever or need to shave my head. I am genuinely upset because it is the cherry on the top of a spectacularly shit shit SHIT time.

Please can anyone help at all?

Have you tried one of the plastic nit combs as you get in the lotion kits?

I don't like the NG at all as like you it destroys my hair..... if its not pulled out it stretches the strands.

Plastic nit comb and loads of conditioner work for my daughter and me.

Good luck!

I’d go chemicals. My daughter is a nightmare to nit comb with thick curly hair so we treat. Uneasy to nit comb - the only advantage of fine hair I’ve discovered

By the way, I've never tried the lotions but as I understand it they zap the lice but not the eggs which then hatch out and the cycle begins again.

Hedrin overnight.
Then again a week later.
It smothers them. But you have to slather it on. Really soak the hair.

Try a plastic flea comb for a cat with your hair soaked in conditioner (brushed through). It is more flexible and forgiving

Vinegar is fun as it burns the little darlings over night and I love frying them with straighteners however whatever you do you will need to comb them out.

JennyOnAPlate · 28/11/2017 21:06

The hedrin that you leave on overnight works.

RavingRoo · 28/11/2017 21:07

Coconut or olive oil until your hair is dripping with it, then use a nitty gritty. This is how I got them out of my arab afro.

Delatron · 28/11/2017 21:08

Hedrin works. It smothers them so not chemicals as such.

I was told recently that vodka will kill everything. Cover all your hair in it, wrap a towel round and leave for half hour or so. Then I’d wash it as usual and dump an entire bottle of conditioner on and brush it through with a normal brush. The alcohol stops the eggs being so stuck on. Then just comb what you can but don’t stress as they should all be dead.

Ok thank you, it will be hedrin that I try I think. The problem is, anything that I leave on my hair be it oils or conditioner (like a hair mask) it makes my hair greasy for a good month no matter how much I wash it. The purple conditioner that you leave in for 5mins made my hair like a wet mop when dry for 3 months. So I fear this will do the same, but still mightily preferable to shaving my head.
Tomorrow I will zap my whole head with the straighteners and if I comb through with a regular narrow-bristled comb will that brush them out?

Nope it needs to be a nit comb as the blighters will be all different sizes. The eggs can also stayed glued to your hair for 6 months so the challenge is to get them to slip off. I started braiding my step daughters hair to make sure the cold got to the back of the ears and at the bottom of her neck as these are their usual hangouts as it's normally nice and warm there. They soon didn't like it!
