Do you have a child who is never ill?

My 11 year old dd came home tonight very tearful with a temperature, a headache, a sore throat and a runny nose. A cold, in other words. I was going to be very brisk with her, then I realized that she has never had one before! She had chicken pox at 3, croup at 4 and what I think was sunstroke at 7. Apart from that, she has literally never been ill before, even slightly. (crosses fingers, knocks on wood and throws salt over left shoulder) Is this a record, and should I donate her to medical science?

DS1 (7) is rarely ill. Had his first cold in about 3 years earlier this year. Like you, I was really surprised when I realised how healthy he normally is.

I put it down to exercise, good(ish) diet and vitamins and fish oil every day (DH always comments on 'what a shiny coat' (i.e. hair) he has, and it's true!

I have two DS 11&12 who are never ill. They both had chickenpox when they were 3&4, then impetigo at 6&7 and have had nothing else. I put it down to a healthy immune system due to my slovenliness in the house.

I was thinking that my incompetent housekeeping must have boosted her immunities too, but ds, who lives in the same house has more illnesses than his sister. Still less than most of his friends, though.

Will someone give me a quick tutorial in how to be sympathetic, please? And how do I know if she's better enough to go to school tomorrow? And does out of date calpol still work?

Yep, my dd is rarely, rarely ill. Agree it is down to good balance of exercise, decent diet and enough sleep.Oh and not too many cleaning products around the house. Builds up a good immune system. Doesn't get colds, had chicken pox, and hand, foot and mouth disease years ago.
If she keeps it up she'll be in line for the Arsenal prizes for 100% attendance at school!

This sort of thread is highly dangerous to post on - if i admit that dd1 is rarely ill, she's surely become very very unwell within 24 hours.

She hasn't been to the doctors for nearly 2 years - she's 5. She was ill for the first 3 years alot with asthma, and now she's really healthy.

seeker · 18/04/2007 22:01

Neither of mine have been to the doctors for llnesses ever! Ds broke a finger when he was about 11 months, and dd had a splinter in her foot that got infected at about 6, but that's it.

You do realize that anyone who posts on this thread will be at casualty before morning, don't you!

Mine are rarely ill either. DS1 10 had his first sickness this year since starting school.
DD's seem to pick up all the colds and coughs though.
i was rarely ill as a child too. Get lots of colds now though (Thanks DD's!)

tortoise · 18/04/2007 22:05

Oh and they have all had chicken pos and DD1,2 and DS2 had hand, foot and mouth!

tortoise · 18/04/2007 22:05

I remember taking dd to the doctor's when she was 2, I think I thought she had an ear infection when she was actually getting some teeth. Anyway the GP was all apologetic and says I think we have lost you daughter's notes, all we have is routine stuff from the HV. But that was all she had, she'd never seen the GP before.
