Grommets that have been in since 2009

Hello all,
In 2009 DS2 had grommets fitted after having constant bouts of ear infections and suffering with glue ear.
The year after the grommets were fitted, he had an ear infection which resulted in him having constant discharge from both ears, which resembled mucus?
Anyway, he saw the consultant who fitted them and was prescribed ear drops after all of the treatments our GP offered had failed.
Since then, DS has struggled with ear infections, usually he will get a throat infection which will then also cause an ear infection.
DS has had 3 or 4 infections this year all resulting in him needing antibiotics to clear them up, he has been having trouble with not being able to hear clearly out of his left ear and has also said he gets dull, achey pains and a "full" feeling at the back of it.
We saw the consultant yesterday who referred him to audiology for a hearing test, the audiologist said that the left ear is on the borderline of mild hearing loss, but the right ear is fine, she then gave the sheet and her findings to the consultant who said to us that DS's hearing is fine, the left ear is "average" and the right ear is superb.
Yet, despite us and DS telling him constantly that there is an issue with the grommets still being there, he is reluctant to do anything and thinks that DS2's fine as he is, the audiologist also said that DS2's left ear drum is quite scarred and she was concerned about it, but the consultant made no comment on that.
I'm at my tethers end, DS2's struggling to hear out of his left ear which means that unless you are looking at him when you speak to him, he cant hear you and its also causing him discomfort and pain.
Would I be unreasonable to ask for a second opinion?
Sorry if it looks like utter twaddle, I'm just frustrated on DS2's behalf, they were supposed to have fallen out ages ago but have been in his ears for about 8 years!

Have they said they can still see them in there?

Missingsleepandthecat · 28/11/2017 17:08

They can still see them yes, but he always comments on there being gunk around them, in fact, he said the last time he saw Ds that the left one "wasnt working" but now apparently it is?

Yeah I'd be asking for a 2nd opinion!

Then thats the route we'll go down then.
The other thing he keeps being told is that the grommets are turning and coming out, thats been going on since 2010!
Thanks Random

My ds had grommets aged 2. One fell out but it took a while for it to be noticed that the other hadn't. He had an op to remove the grommet and repair the hole it left. That failed. He had a further repair along with mastiodectomy. The repair failed. He had a third failed repai and we are now waiting for him to turn 18 and let them have one last go to repair the hole in his eardrum. He had recurring ear infections as a young child. Grew out of them some time during primary.
All this has left him with mild hearing loss in one ear and moderate loss in the other that requires a hearing aid.
I really would be looking for a second opinion if I were you.
