Mooncup questions!

I’ve posted in General Health as didn’t want a dressing down if I posted in AIBU? Even though it gets more traffic. So...
I’m really thinking about asking for a moon cup for Christmas but I just have a couple of questions I’m hoping some of you ladies could answer?
I have a very irregular period so when I do eventually have one I’m very, very heavy! Is a moon cup suitable for a heavy flow? Will it be too messy?
How will I know what size to get ?
To the ladies who have used all tampons, towels and cups? Do you have a preference? Has anyone tried a mooncup and decided it’s not for them? TIA

I know it's not the point but... that's not the most glamourous of presents! Who would give you that and would you open it in public?!

I can't answer all aspects of your question as my flow is pretty light but I love my Mooncup and much prefer it to towels or tampons. Sometimes get a small leak at the beginning of my period so have a panty liner back-up.

Do you usually ask for tampons/towels for Christmas?Hmm

Justmuddlingalong · 25/11/2017 17:07

Ignoring the fact the you're considering it as a gift, I'll answer your questions. It's great for heavy flow, not so much for very clotty. It's just blood so once you're used to it, it's not messy. 2 sizes available. Had a baby, not had a baby. I've used one for years and would never ever go back to tampons. Easy to use, doesn't go to landfill and works out a lot cheaper.

I used one for a short time. Leaked all the time. I have heavy periods.

Leaving aside the present aspect!! I got one recently (it is a different brand than mooncup) and it has pros and cons.

Pros: it holds more than a tampon and although it will leak if it gets full to the top it doesn’t slip down like a tampon. Therefore I can leave it for the day at work and even if it overflows I wear a pad.

Cons: Tricky to change. I haven’t even attempted to change it anywhere apart from at home as it is hard to remove cleanly.

NoqontroI · 25/11/2017 17:31

Totally suitable for heavy flow. It takes a little getting used to, but it really is worth it. I can leave it for hours and hours before emptying, no need to change it at work.

Hah thanks guys! Not really a present just instead of my husband getting me something I don’t need for Christmas he could get me one of those. Not one for hoarding toiletries and stuff and I wouldn’t expect him to wrap it. Probably worded that wrong! No need to get touchy though! Thanks for the replies everyone!

I have a weird two heavy day, one normal day period and most san pro gives me thrush.

I do the mooncup with thinx on the heavy days and just a mooncup on the third.

It’s a bit messier than san pro and the advice about putting loo roll in the loo before emptying the cup is very important, but on balance it’s much better than itchy bits 😊

lljkk · 25/11/2017 18:20

If your husband has great sense of humour he could do some very creative wrapping with that, indeed.

You need to try one to know for sure. Getting a good fit seems to be a knack that doesn't happen instantly. Wear a towel with it to start.

There is sizing guidance on the purchase website.

I don't understand loo roll in loo before you dump. I'd rather flush twice (shrug). Not any messier than disposible sanpro for me.
