One pupil won’t dilate but the eye is ok...

Had an eye check up last week and the optician was concerned that one of my pupils won’t dilate at all, The eye seemed fine apart from that. I’ve been referred to hospital to see someone within two weeks but not heard anything yet. Has anyone else had this and what was the cause? I have had cancer in the past and am worried in case I have a brain tumour or something awful.

No one here can reassure you. Speak to the optician again and ask what could be the cause of this.

PrinceMichaelOfMoldavia · 24/11/2017 18:18

The optician wouldn’t tell me any possible causes. I’m not really asking for reassurance, just if anyone else has had this?

Sorry I have nothing helpful to say, except stay away from Google!

Thank goodness you saw an optician and that they are taking it seriously. I hope you get a hospital appointment soon and get good news.

I've just had similar, one pupil larger than the other and fixed, not reacting to light. Im a HCP so know the potential causes and I've too had cancer so of course the first worry was Mets.
Anyway, I was seen within 2 weeks, had a CT which was fine then an MRI which also was clear. They think it was just a weird nerve thing and nothing to worry about at all, so hope that reassures you. It's hard once we've endured cancer everything else then does ring alarm bells. Good luck.

That’s good to hear Ethel, glad you were ok. I have a yearly eye check and it wasn’t doing this last year. Have had a lot of nerve type pain recently.

Could be Adie’s pupil. Looks very odd but isn’t harmful.

PrinceMichaelOfMoldavia · 15/12/2017 20:40

Still waiting for appointment. Consultant decided it wasn’t urgent and I was booked in for 27th Dec. Rang up to see why I haven’t had a confirmation letter and my appointment hadn’t been booked in. It will now be January. Eye still the same plus headaches.

Inefficiency like that would give anyone a headache. I hope they've got you down for a cancellation and fit you in very soon.

underneaththeash · 16/12/2017 08:16

OP do you mean that your pupil is always big (i.e. won't constrict?)
Or that it's habitually small (i.e. won't dilate?)

Is your eye red at all?

PrinceMichaelOfMoldavia · 16/12/2017 08:58

Its sort of medium sized and won’t get any smaller with light. Doesn’t change size at all.

OP posts:
PrinceMichaelOfMoldavia · 16/12/2017 09:02

And no it isn’t red.

If the eye isn't red (and hasn't been red) then it is very likely to be Adie's pupil. Get someone in the house to have a look at the pupil when you look at something close to - like a book. If it is Adie's then the pupil should constrict (get smaller) in response to looking at something close to.

Finally got my eye appointment for 5 January after series of hospital fuck ups. Still having headaches and numb arm.

This is an eye appt , not neurology? A bit of progress I hope.
