DD having general anaesthetic thursday feeling very scared

DD having general on thursday for a cystography, she's 6.5months and has a serios medical condition which makes her more at risk from it. Its a routine procedure with a view to her op in the future. The op is on her genital area and reproductive system so highly contoversial in some ways as its not life threatening but needs doing at some point. I csn see why drs etc think its best done earlier, and the procedure needs doing so they can plan for that but i'm so scared she won't survive the anaesthetic. I know they wouldnt do such a non essential procedure if the thought there was a risk but she's so small still, i guess ai just want reassurance that other babies have coped with a general!

I don't have any experience of this but just wanted to wish you well. I know I would be very anxious in the same situation. Best wishes to you and your dd

funkadelic · 17/04/2007 21:34

Can't give reassurance but can say know how you feel as my DS2 is having first general tomorrow, we are going in for routine op he is having testicle lowered, he's 7 months and all should be fine but it is nerve racking they are so little. Hope you get on ok

HuwEdwards · 17/04/2007 21:35

no experience, but as you say, the doctors wouldn't do this if there was any undue risk - will think of you both on Thursday.

used2bthin · 17/04/2007 21:38

Thanks, its very worrying. Its been postponed twice, and both times i was very upset as altho i dread it, had mentally prepared, been through this panic etc and just want it over with. Funkadelic, sorry u r having to go through this too, hope it all goes well. What time r u in? R u having to starve him etc tonight?

Got to be there at 9am but not going down to theatre till 1.30pm so can have brekkie early and can have a breast feed up to 9.30am so not too bad really, just a chance that they will keep us overnight being later in the day which i'm not looking foward to, just know i'm gonna cry when they take him away! How about you?

bozza · 17/04/2007 21:49

DS has his first anaesthetic at 11 months for a growth on his face. He did really well with it but it was hard. He had his fifth GA last Friday to have his testicle lowered and he did really well at age 6. He was on the morning list, so had nothing to eat or drink from the night before and we had to be there at 7.30 but he didn't go down until 12.30 - those 5 hours did drag. But he is doing well, although the weekend was hard.

bozza · 17/04/2007 21:49

Lots of people cry funk. It is perfectly normal, I suddenly felt very alone because only one parent allowed down with them.

used2bthin · 17/04/2007 21:51

its at 7.30 so last formula at midnight then water till 5 i think (need to re read the admissions thing!) Think we are staying over night at least too but can't decide how much stuff to take as we don't live thatclose to the hospital. I think DP will actually stay with her as she goes to sleep cos i'm same, think i will be too upset! When it comes to it though i bet i can't leave her. Where do u wait while its being done do u know?

bozza · 17/04/2007 21:56

They will have somewhere for you to wait but I usually go for a walk at first. One good thing for those of you with littlies, they are usually first on the list so you won't have marathon 5 hour waits like we did.

Boco · 17/04/2007 21:56

My dd had a general anaesthetic recently - for an MRI scan - she'd just turned 2, so a bit older, but still seems tiny.

Like you, it'd been put off several times, and i think the waiting was the worst bit. She was absolutely fine - it wasn't pleasant, but going under happened fast - she was anaethetised for about 2 1/2 hours. She was really upset when she first came round, but after a cuddle she was totally back to normal, running about and giggling - within a couple of hours. When they explained the risks to me, they said that driving to the hospital is far riskier than the anaesthetic, and it is so rare for anything to happen - they really did reassure me.

Hope it goes well for her

funkadelic · 17/04/2007 22:00

We've got to still be in for 9am even though hes first on afternoon list, got to do tests etc apparently. It just makes it worse cos hes such a smiler i'm sure he will be grinning at everyone as they put him out, make me crumble even more!!! Do they have a mask or injection?

used2bthin · 17/04/2007 22:01

Oh Boco, that does make it seem a bit less scary. My freind jsaid earlier about how it used to be routine for dental procedures too which made me feel it was a bit less dramatic. Yes i remember at DD's mri they had a policy of youngest goes first so hopwefully won't have a long wait. At her mri we did cuddle and wrap, just fed her loads then she was swaddled to keep her still (she was only a week and half old- can't imagine it happening now!)

dd a smiler too and i know exactly what u mean, when we go for blood tests it makes it feel like such a betrayel somehow. But we r just doing what we have to do.

Be strong I'm sure it will be fine, will be thinking of you on Thurs

rosealbie · 17/04/2007 22:09

My dd has unfortunately had to have 4 GA's in the last few months and I agree with others that you will probably cry when your dd goes under although for me it was more a release of emotion I had been keeping in as didn't want to be worried in front of her (she was just over 2 for her first one). You can either wait on the ward while she is having procedure or go for a walk. With my dd they called us down to recovery as soon as she started to come round so I (they only let one of us into recovery) was the first person she saw as she woke up, I guess it is the same for babies. I hope you dd is first on the list and everything goes really well.

used2bthin · 17/04/2007 22:19

Oh thanks for telling me that, I didnt think about that bit, in that case i think i'll be the one to go and get her. Thanks everyone for the support and advice. Its made me feel loads better. And funkadelic best of luck for tomorrow, i'll think of you too. Let me know how you got on and i'll do the same.

OP posts:
bozza · 18/04/2007 10:47

Sometimes when they come round they can be cross and confused, but other times they can be just wake up gently. When DS had his GA as a baby, he was really cross, but in an angry rather than in pain way which I recognised and was soon sorted by some milk and then some grapes and a yogurt (he was nearly 1).

used2bthin · 19/04/2007 17:54

So funkadelic, how did it go? We came home around 1pm. Got as far as we could (nil by mouth etc, canula in, blood tests done, consent forms signed and undressed etc waitng as we were next on list)then the surgeon came to say her electrolyte balance was v poor-this is part of her condition and usually well managed by medication. So not only could they not do the general but they were going to keep us in anyway! Eventually got sent ome and got to increase her medicne as she's outgrown her dose hence poor levels but got to go back sun for more tests and next time they do it they'll take us in the night before. So anxiety over nothing in my case but glad they spotted she needed more medicine in time, funkadelic hope it went better for you!

We are back safe and sound thanks u2bt. Went really well, he was fine yes i ran out of anasthetic room silently blubbing, and sat glued to my chair in ward while waiting convinced my bleep was not gonna work!!!!But it did and we were both in recovery holding his hand as he woke so it was fine. He was a bit groggy and wingey for a while, but once he had another sleep on the ward, he woke up as bright as a button. Had to stay overnight as he did not wee to order but nevermind, he seems painfree keeping him drugged up on calpol and nurofen, but today hes been wriggling about like normal, you'd never know he'd had his veg interfered with!!!Sorry to hear about your dd bless her, bad enough gearing yourself up without let down at the 11th hour poor you.
