MRI - what to expect

I'm having an MRI on my back tomorrow. I've had the leaflet re taking off jewellery and wearing soft clothing but have no idea what to expect.

Anyone had one? What's it like?

Take toenail varnish off

StinkyMcgrinky · 20/11/2017 22:08

When I had my first MRI the technician wheeling me down kept stroking my arm and telling me how well in was doing so I was expecting something horrific. It was absolutely fine, lying in the middle of a big noisy donut wearing headphones. I listened to radio 1 and actually found the noise quite relaxing. I nodded off. 😁

Yes take nail varnish off just incase.
The worst part is how bloody noisy they are, but I found it reassuring as the people operating the scan in the other room would say this one is 3 minutes etc, so it isn't constant.

I thought it was like sitting under a lorry. Not much fun but nice when it's over.

WelshMoth · 21/11/2017 07:58

All done. It was so noisy! Music made little difference and I couldn't understand what the radiographer was
Saying through the mic so I just lay there.

I'm in the waiting room now, feeling wobbly and headachy. Is this normal?

I felt a bit like that. It is noisy and I found it left me feeling a bit odd. Glad it's done.

girlandboy · 21/11/2017 08:06

Pfft, how come I wasn't offered music to listen to? Wink

I felt slightly dizzy and disorientated afterwards but only for a few minutes. I will pass.

Well done!

WelshMoth · 21/11/2017 08:19

Thanks both.
I'm Going to grab some breakfast The head into work.

The music was pointless - I heard a couple of bars before the racket started. I'll take earplugs if there's ever a next time! Grin

I had one on my pelvis , had to strip to pants abd wear a gown. I also got a cannula and an injection of something to slow my bowel down, which gave me very blurred vision for about half an hour. Think that's probably specific to pelvis though. I was very, very sore after from lying still and slept a good 3 hours. Did get me some answers though so that was a positive move.

Results could be as fast as a week- mine were. Glad it went !
