ever coughed up a tiny bit of blood during a chest infection?

trying again because didn't put a title on my first try sorry. i am a regular [yawn] but a bit embarrassed hence new name. I really need some common sense advice please. After a really bad chest infection in November after i was hacking for England for two weeks, i coughed up a few specks of blood in my phlegm [sorry if TMI] on two consecutive mornings, just once each morning. I had a dry sort of clearing my chest cough all winter and now the warmer weather has come it is pretty much better. Saw a chest specialist yesterday on advice of GP because i used to be asthmatic and the cough dragged on all winter. She wants me to have a chest x ray. now I had a road accident as a child and had countless x rays and really have a phobia about them now. Just hate them and worry about the radiation exposure [i know chest x rays are very small exposure but have had so many big x rays in past]

We desperately want to start trying for another child. I've been putting it off to get chest sorted out. so i have to start making some decisions. thing is, what would you do in my situation? Now that cough is better would you have the x ray or just start TTC? Have you ever coughed up a tiny bit of blood during a chest infection? Sorry if i sound completely barmy, just this is really worrying me at the moment. I smoked for a year during a stressful period. Thanks.

yes I have

doc says it is common - usually not from lungs but from burst blood vessels in throat from excessive coughing

hth!

thanks Enid. I just wondered why she was so keen for me to have chest x ray - i suppose she has to cover herself. Do you have any idea if you would have a chest x ray in these circumstances?

I coughed up tons when I had pneumonia, dark brown type
Have also coughed up little specks which were no problem. The main difference aside from the blood colour and amount was the PAIN

Doc was unconcerned about the little specks but then I did get better - a chronic cough should be checked FWIW though.
I would have the xray tbh

expatinscotland · 17/04/2007 12:23

Yes.

Take your doctor's advice and have the xray.

Put off TTC till then if you're concerned.

I have pneumonia as a complication of flu and coughed up blood then.

expatinscotland · 17/04/2007 12:23

had pneumonia.

It may well be nothing, but the fact that the cough has lingered was enough to get you refered. the consultant wouldn't order the X-ray unless s/he thought it neccessary. Have the Xray, get the all clear and then move on

the cough has got better tho! oh dear. don't know if i can bring myself to go in the x ray room. brings me out in cold sweats just thinking about it.

yes, I've had this too - as Enid said.
I do think though that you should get your chest sorted out. Apart from ruling out the really nasty diseases, asthma can suddenly come back v. badly - mine had gone for years and then last year I ended up with a chest infection which brought on a severe asthma attack all of a sudden - I went to the GP and she told me off v. sternly and said that I should have called 999 as they're the sort of attacks that kill people.
It's just not worth messing with.

ditheringanonymous · 17/04/2007 17:31

but i feel well and have no cough now! I guess i'm really wanting someone to say 'nah i would just get on with it' I know you are all erring on the side of caution for my sake but i wonder if you all would do the same really, if your cough had cleared up. I don't know. My asthma was great during my last pregnancy and i don't think it is that. ah well i did ask for common sense advice....
