essbee - could someone pop over and look after dd? It IS a very high temperature, and something must be causing it. if it's a bacterial infection, he should have anti-biotics asap. It WILL come down a bit with nurofen, but the infection will still be there.

Can he put his chin on his chest without pain?

DS has been poorly with a viral infection for a while, then recovered - and yesterday his temperature shot up to 39.7. I took him to our GP who called the paediatrician at A&E, and they told us to go straight down. They gave him a really thorough check over, and said it was a chest infection, out him on amoxyllin and said go straight back to hospital if he's not hugely improved by Wed eve.

Yes, the chances are you will have a boring trip, and it will turn out to be not terribly serious - but it is a v high temperature, and you don't want an ear infection, for example, to take hold.

AND my colleagues little boy had a viral infection with v high temperature, and because it went on for a while, it has done something to his kidneys.....GO!

poppyseed · 20/07/2004 20:11

why hesitate? Go.....or use the out of hours GP service that you must have?

have you phoned your emergency doc?

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 20:23

You could always try putting him in a tepid (NOT cold!) bath but with a temp that high, even if it's come down a little, I'd take him asap. Especially since they've advised you to bring him. His temp could rise again during the night and it would be worse to have to make the trip at 3am! Take him and be safe.

poppyseed · 20/07/2004 20:36

How about that GP? They are paid to be on call! Don't feel bad about calling them...

sportyspice · 20/07/2004 20:39

I would still go down the a&e route or get a doctor out to see him just so i knew everything was ok and get some proper medical advice before night time otherwise i'd end up sitting awake watching to make sure he's ok all night.

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 21:02

Yup! I've been there & done that. Staying awake all night hovering over a sick child is NOT fun.

SofiaAmes · 20/07/2004 21:28

Take him to a&e. Better safe than sorry. That is a very very high temperature and is certainly indicating something happening to him. I think you should really go and make sure that it's nothing serious.

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 21:35

By the way, please let us know what happens! Hope he (and you!) feel better very soon.

poppyseed · 20/07/2004 21:36

I agree. Best wishes

sorry to butt in Essbee but I really think you ought to take him. Can you get a taxi in to A & E or is someone able to take you all? If you're not able to sleep for worrying about him it's not going to do you any good and you won't be 100% for tomorrow if he's still poorly. Please go, i'm sure they'll see you pretty quickly.

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 21:54

Yes, please go! I wish I could take you myself... I hate to interfere but I really, really think you should take him.

assumpta · 20/07/2004 21:57

I know it's a hassle to take him, but how awful you would feel if something happened to him.

poppyseed · 20/07/2004 22:12

GP?

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 22:20

Is there a doctor on MN?

poppyseed · 20/07/2004 22:25

My husband is a doctor!!

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 22:28

Good. What's his opinion?

lou33 · 20/07/2004 22:35

Desperately hoping not to contradict any doctors, but seeing as it is going down, I would give him some more emds and gove it an hour, and see what happens after that. If it hasn't gone down or has risen, then I would take him to a&e.

katzguk · 20/07/2004 22:37

i'm a complete drama queen so i would go to a and e but then for me its only a 5min drive so different story

CountessDracula · 20/07/2004 22:37

essbee get a cab then! Come on you really must take him it's still very high.

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 22:39

yeah but what if it's something SERIOUS? (not wanting to be alarmist and mention any particular illnesses but do have at least one in mind...)

katzguk · 20/07/2004 22:39

is there an oncall GP? surely you would warrant a visit, child high temp, other child asleep, no transport (well can't drive)
