Anal Fissure for 6 months, scared and sore

Hi

Despite having a teenage daughter and having looked for words of wisdom from mumsnet many times in the past, I have never posted, until now...

I have had a sore bum on and off since a few slightly painful poos back in May brought about by eating a load of peanuts (never ever again) Having had mild piles after birth if DD2 I assumed I had piles and self treated for internal piles.

Had sore times and ok times all summer but more sore in recent weeks and noticed external piles appearing and feeling generally sore. Went to GP last week and she looked and said I have piles on the outside and thinks I have a fissure. She offered to refer me to hospital or to try a stronger piles cream. I said I would do what ever she felt was best. She prescribed a stronger hydrocortisone cream, Scheriproct and said to go back in few weeks.

Having now read about anal fissures (gone Google mad) I am now realising that the symptoms match what I've been experiencing but just not to the extreme as some people have described. But I relate to the nagging pain and soreness on and off all day. I don't have issues with constipation and am an active 42 year old. I am going to go back to the GP and ask for the cream that increases blood flow to bum area. I cannot see a tear in my bum but it feels like it is inside above where the tight muscle bit ends.

As it's obviously been there for 6 months and not cleared up I have got myself into a really silly state of thinking that it will be with me forever causing chronic pain (if it gets worse) or I will end up having the surgery that cuts the muscle and i will end up soiling my pants. I'm an anxious person generally but this has made me feel panicked reading about the difficulties treating these things!

Can anyone offer me some words of wisdom and hope as I've spent all evening crying on and off as the family are out. I've been on my feet all day with work and I feel scared and sore.

Thank you

Thanks I didn’t use the cream this morning and still feel bad I was going to try to persevere for two weeks but I can’t do with feeling like this much longer.

Amazonian27 · 27/01/2019 11:17

Thanks Joanna88 think I am starting with yet another UTI this morning.

Joanna88 · 27/01/2019 14:47

Oh no. Maybe that's why you've been feeling so rough?

Bubs101 · 28/01/2019 03:23

@Joanna88

My consultant didn't feel comfortable performing LIS as I haven't had any children yet, and says the risk of incontinence further down the line with potential pregnancies and births is too high. To be honest, the fissure that the flap was performed on has healed quite nicely, it's just another one on the other side has formed which has been causing me trouble, the consultant said its due to me having tight sphincter muscles.

Oh wow it's a relief to read this thread and know I'm not alone. Had a fissure since start of December I think it was caused by diarrhoea. I had a month of antibiotics after my second baby and it completely screwed up my tummy :(

Been trying loads of things, lots of water, I eat super healthy, lactulose, dulcoease. Anusol suppositories didn't do much. Creams so far have just burned the skin, it's completely red raw down there :'( gtn gave me epic headaches. Just feeling massively down right now. I'm going to get some prune juice tomorrow and try a low calorie diet for a bit to see if I can reduce poo size. These fissures are horrendous :(

Can I ask do any of you also have a rectocele? I have a grade 3 I'm convinced that's part of the problem as it means poo becomes really large. Sorry for tmi, feel like I have no dignity left tbh :(

Hi. Wondering how everyone is getting on? I'm just the same 😂 no better and no worse x

Zacs · 24/02/2019 17:47

Hi Joanna, touch wood I'm better... Coupleof weeks ago I was in agony, gtn cream was giving me pounding headaches and the anaesthetic cream burned all my skin down there, I had a really nasty reaction to it :/

So... I'm not sure what has done the trick but here's my story hopefully it helps some of you xxx

I had a strep a uterine infection postpartum back in November and a month of antibiotics which gave me diarrhoea and triggered the fissure. I tried anusol hc (gave a slight improvement), drinking loads of water, I eat super healthy. Then tried gtn cream but couldn't handle the headaches. Oh and lactulose to try and soften stools (didn't really work). Two weeks ago I saw doc and mentioned I'd also still got stinging skin in one area of my vulva (sorry if tmi...) and she did a swab. Came back with strep a. So she put me on penicillin. She thought the strep a might have been impairing healing of the anal fissure. I also mentioned that nothing was working to soften my stools so she gave me laxido sachets. Anyway I decided to hit this thing with everything! So alongside penicillin I had a laxido sachet twice a day, a glass of prune juice once a day, reduced calorie diet for a week (1500 a day, figured less in less out!), and finally anusol hc suppositories twice a day. Oh I also tried to wash with water after a bm and sprayed some antiseptic wound wash on the fissure. One or all of those things worked!!! After about 5 days I was pain and blood free! I think the laxido drink was the key it is a super effective stool softener! I made the mistake this week of stopping laxido (it is pretty revolting) and the fissure split open as soon as the poo was back to being solid. Again sorry for tmi! Anyway I'm going to stick with laxido for a month at least.

Good luck ladies xxxx still can't believe how incredibly painful an anal fissure was.

Zacs · 24/02/2019 17:48

Should add I'd had thefissure for 2 months so it was definitely a chronic one.

Joanna88 · 24/02/2019 20:28

Zacs I'm so pleased to hear things are better for you. There is hope. I've had mine 17 months now 😫. Hoping one day it will heal. Sounds like the infection was definitely a barrier to your healing x

Zacs · 24/02/2019 21:37

17 months? Oh you poor thing :( might be worth finding out if you've got a long term infection? I wouldn't have known I had strep a if it weren't for the swab. Hope you find something that works xxx
