Molar dilemma: Why did my dentist prescribed just half course of antibiotics? Is he trying to swindle me?

Thanks for reading this, any opinion highly welcomed:

  • One of my molars cracked. I got a dentist appointment 3 weeks afterwards. I didn't have any pain in the mean time. The dentist (a very young one by the way)told me he needed to remove the molar, I asked for a crown and he told me they were expensive (what did he cared???) and as I didn't agree of having the tooth removed, he filled it and told me it would get infected, the molar was fine for almost a year.

  • One year later I went back to the practice and saw a more senior doctor who offered me a crown, sadly, by then I had to cover the full £300 cost of it as my baby was already 13m old. He ordered a dental cleaning (an extra £96) before ordering the crown.

  • After a week the tooth started hurting but just for three days, three weeks later the senior doctor applied a filling again to see how the thing evolved, it was fine for another three months, so I asked for the crown to be done.

  • Went back to the practice and got the younger doctor again who told me the molar was infected and he needed to remove it (I was not experiencing any pain by the way), he told me that it was impossible to put a crown on it and the only option was a bridge (£800) or an implant (£2000).

-I asked if antibiotics could kill the infection and he told me they wouldn't as the infection was not in the tooth (what?). I insisted in the antibiotics and once at home I realised he only prescribed half of the antibiotics box.

  • I'm fuming . Is he trying to rip me off?

I have insisted in seeing the other dentist but they told me I can't because I'm registered with the young, to make the things worse it seems that there's shortage of dentists as other practices are not taking new patients.

Can you go private to see the dentist? how much do they charge? I really eed a second opinion... have tried to convince myself in spending £300 in acrown (BTW, is the price right?) and can not imagine my self with a hole in my denture or £800 less

I had a root canal done which is infected. It's not the tooth but where the roots were and antibiotics wont get rid of it. I'm waiting for it to get to the stage where it needs removing or redone on the nhs which will take at least another year.

It doesnt hurt either.

Yeah, if its in the roots antibiotics won't help. He might have been giving you some just to make you happy, but IMO that makes him an idiot. The worst thing a dr. or dentist can do is give you antibiotics when you don't need them, because that just builds up resistance to them. Some praticioners do it anyway, just to get the patient off their backs.

My dentist said £300 for a crown. That's a private dentist. Wouldn't think it would be that much on the nhs if you can find an nhs dentist.
