Hi Guys, what a lovely surprise! I had the surgery and it all went well, a bit sore afterwards. Have just come back from a week long rehab course (not of the kate moss variety) for deafened people. It's run by a charity called LINK. If anyone out there is losing or has lost their hearing, I'd definitely recommend it. Their headquarters are in Eastbourne link to LINK!
We had audiologists, counsellors, RNID people, hearing therapists and cochlear implant patients. We were booked into a lovely hotel, full board in Edinburgh (Portobello) and it was funded by our respective health boards. They even fund places for family members and partners, since being deafened is something that obviously affects everyone in our lives. I learned loads and met people in the same position as me, and we shared our experiences. It was really powerful.
Anyhoo, enough about me! Welliemum, have you been switched on yet? Ooooh, I'm so excited for you! Two people on the course had implants done recently, after being deaf for years and years. They were saying it was amazing being able to eventually hear the birds sing and the sound of the waves. We had a volunteer from Cochlear, who received his 1st implant 7 years ago and can now, with his new one, listen to music. He said that he recently went to a concert and could hear every instrument.
I'm being switched on this month, 17th MAy so I'm not far behind you welliemum! Lets's compare notes eh? Sending you lots of positive thoughts, I'm sure it will be a really emotional day for you.
Much much love xxx
