ds 2 (8) has been running around outside all day and earlier in the bath tells me his neck hurts.

it seems to be when he moves it to the right and is then quite painful

best thing to do might be to phone nhs direct and see what they say. but if your worried dont take anychance ring the doctor and see what thet have to say

Londonmamma · 15/04/2007 20:20

Unless he has any other worrying symptoms he has probably just pulled a muscle.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/04/2007 20:22

Does he seem unwell? He probably has just pulled it, if he's not showing any other worrisome signs (e.g. the meningitis list), and particularly if it's only when he moves it one way, I would:

  1. alternate cold and hot compresses a bit
  1. massage a bit - neck, shoulders, whatever feels lumpy
  1. encourage him to stretch his neck gently if that doesn't hurt - ideally, tucking chin to chest, gentle rotations etc
  1. give him maxdose of iboprofen (unless he is asthmatic or otherwise not allowed it?)
  1. help him find a way to sleep comfortably with his neck resting (ideally on his back with neck straight and rested - a rolled pillow behind his neck to support it?)
  1. talk to your gp or physio if it's still bad in the morning.
LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/04/2007 20:22

has he been bouncycastle'ing or trampolining?
do you have any of those littletikes climbing wosits?

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 20:23

Is he DS1's mirror twin? He's been complaining about his neck (left side!) having rolled down the bank in our garden in a barrel shaped bag with DS2 . I'm assuming he's cricked it and will re-evaluate in the morning.

cheeryface · 15/04/2007 20:24

he's gone to bed now but he doesn't seem unwell.

has been having water fights outside all afternoon with his mates

so, if still sore in the morning, is it the g.p rather than school would you say?

i'm hopeless at this kinda thing

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 15/04/2007 20:33

If it's causing him lots of pain, then I'd go to the GP. (Does he like school? Will he give an honest answer, or try to avoid school?) If the discomfort is bothering him in the night or morning, maxdose of iboprofen will help with the underlying problem.

(My DS1 once had a bad fall and really hurt his neck. I think he was off for two days from it! And he loves school, but his neck really hurt. By the time I'd got in touch with a physio of course it was fine.)

cheeryface · 15/04/2007 20:34

i am correct to assume though, being as he doesn't have a temp or anything that it's muscular and not meningitus??

sorry, very over anxious me

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 15/04/2007 20:36

It really doesn't sound like meningitis. If he's not unwell and not hating lights, then it's not meningitis. I'd keep an eye on him for fear he might develop any of these symptoms, but from what I know, the neck pain associated with meningitis isn't one-sided, for one thing.

Londonmamma · 15/04/2007 20:36

I would say so, yes.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/04/2007 20:38

if they were waterfighting maybe someone squirted his back or something and he twisted his neck sharply to see whoit was, or arched away from the spray ifyswim?
its quite a high speed active game ist it? he may have moved in ways quite quickly that he ususally doesnt and pulled the muscle.
like when played rounders last weekend for the first time in about 10 years and couldnt moce or even sit down the next day?
lol

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/04/2007 20:38

when i and move not moce!

cheeryface · 15/04/2007 20:52

how is your ds1 soupdragon?

to update on my ds2, in agony today can't move head without pain. doctor says he must have sprained it somehow. he mentioned some medical name beginning with t, wish i couls remember now. anyway, says it could take a couple of weeks to settle and if not physio.

he is laid on the settee now feeling sorry for himself.

he's just had 2 weeks off i bloody hope were not in for two more!

Much the same as yesterday thanks. I don't think he's done anything serious to it since he can still play on the Wii and went swimming this morning but given half the chance he'll whinge about it and doesn't hold his head straight, bless him.

Sorry your DSs was worse this morning! I've dosed DS with Calpol (my nurofen was 2 years out of date and even the calpol was for under 6 years [badmother]) and I think it stopped it hurting.
