Growth in throat???? Anyone?

My mum casually told me today that she is having an MRI tomorrow because the hospital found a growth in her throat. She was referred by her GP just a few weeks back after coughing like there's something always in her throat and having a sore throats for many weeks/months.
My concern is the speed at which she is having these tests. Is the growth likely to be something nasty or can it be something harmless?
I'm worrying more so the fact she didn't tell me anything!

Easy to say Twopeas but it may not be anything spiteful. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy four days after my visit to my doctor. Nothing bad was found but I think the NHS have a policy to work fast if there is a chance of things being bad. My best wishes to you and your Mum. A thought, perhaps she hasn't said much because she just doesn't know what to expect.

It could be something or nothing, but if there is a possibility that it could be cancerous, hospital assessments and tests are usually done within a week or two, routinely. She probably won't get the results for a few more days or weeks. Does she want you to go with her next time? She's bound to be concerned, and probably doesn't want to worry you, but this is a tough thing to go through, even if it all turns out to be nothing worrying. Good luck to you both.

Could be a goitre maybe? I think they're due to over active thyroid.

She's had an under active thyroid for about 25 years.
Her appointment is the same time as my daughters parents evening appointment so I'll speak to the teacher in the morning to see if anything can be done to switch it to another time. My mum won't drive in the dark and my dad has just had a new hip and still unable to drive so I really need to go with her.
Will they tell her if the MRI is clear on the day or so they wait until the results have been checked by the specialist?

They wouldn't discuss anything at all. So said that someone will contact her with results and it usually takes around two weeks. So will hopefully be this week. I'm taking it as a good sign as if it was something serious they surely would have been in touch sooner!
