How many bugs can you get in 6 months???

Since last October, dd's birthday, we've had:

3 stomach bugs
Chickenpox
2 lots of bronchitis
pneumonia twice (me)
5 colds
1 unexplained all over rash

Dd is 4.5 - is this normal??? I'm beginning to get so depressed about it. I'm just recovering from the second bout of pneumonia and today dd's not eating and says her tummy hurts ...

I just can't face either her or me getting ill again.

Does this improve when they get a bit older?

ahhhh if it makes you feel any better i have not know a week of non illness since my lo is born. Cant seem to get rid of this chest infection this week sigh..........

and any typing in good grammar is also down the pan

Really? How old is yours then? I feel like we had a reasonably good run until the last 6 months or so.

I used to show off about my immune system, I'd often go 2-3 years without even a cold. Since being a mum I seem to be never well and I'm constantly dreading the next thing.

it can't be that bad if you can count the colds. we seem to move seemlessly onto the next one each time.

3 tummy bugs in 6 months is a bit more than usual I'd say though.

imaginaryfriend · 14/04/2007 21:23

Me too. I thought you were supposed to get about 9 months immunity to tummy bugs after you've had them. The two bouts of pneumonia are a bit extreme too ...

you don't get 9 months of immunity to tummy bugs in general, but you do get some immunity to the exact bug you've just had.

do you mean full on vomiting / poorly tummy bugs or a slight tummy ache and soft poo?

imaginaryfriend · 14/04/2007 21:28

Full one ones. For me anyway. Dd's had milder versions.

I think it's normal if your dd has just started school everyday this year, maybe not if she's been in a nursery in previous years. One friend of mine is going through this with her dd1 who just turned five.

Ds1 was ill constantly through every winter for the first 4 winters, but this year, fingers crossed, only one day of fever and absolutely nothing else. He's always been around a lot of other children. The younger ones still get ill all the time - I'm hoping they'll be over it by 4yo too.

Since january we've had 2 lots of chicken pox, 2 unexplained rashes
2 chest infections, one caused by chicken pox and ds ended up in hospital, 4 lots of tummy bugs, 1 lot of infected chicken pox spots and one endless cold along side all of these lol. However since the weather has perked up they have both been healthy (touches wood) for the last fortnight.

It does seem endless but my gp keeps reminding me if they get lots of bugs at this age their immune system will be tough as nails when they're older so cling onto this hope! I hope you all feel better soon. x

I also heard that los that get loads of bugs early on are way less likely to get childhood leukemia, but no idea what the evidence is.

Crazydazy · 14/04/2007 21:48

My kids used to catch everything and in winter had a cold/bad cough every month.

They have been taking vitamins for 18 months and have had one bad cold over the winter each and no tummy bugs at all and they are 7 and 5.

I can't remember the last time DD went to the doctor and DS was there only for his eczema.

imaginaryfriend · 14/04/2007 22:14

ledodgy - 4 tummy bugs since Christmas??? That's worse than us ...

CrazyDazy, we all take vitamins. And our diet is good. And we exercise a lot. I really don't know what else to do ...

We didn't get ill at all really until dd was about 2 then we got the odd thing but really since her 4th birthday it's been constant.
