He is teething and I gave him some Calpol (5ml) at 11, and then we all went ot bed, he has just woken up screaming in oain and I thought it was 3 or 4am so gave him more, and then realised the time. I feel sick. Can any harm come to him? What should I do?

no idea if this is a problem so i'd ring nhs direct

pucca · 13/04/2007 00:12

My sil did this once but with ibuprofen, and my niece was only 6 mth old, she rang NHS direct and iirc it was ok, it wasnt a prob.

Also when my ds had his 1st lot of immunisations he ended up at A&E and they were giving him larger doses to bring his temp down.

HTH, but if in doubt ring NHS direct.

NutterlyUts · 13/04/2007 00:14

I'm pretty sure (but not a medical expert) that the recommended dose on the calpol bottle isn't actually anywhere near dangerous, and I'm sure I've read on here of mums watching DRs in A+E giving additional calpol to kids when the maximum "bottle" dose had been given, and some even being told by Drs in A+E that more can be given before the maximum is reached. Try searching for calpol in the messages to see what comes up.
HOWEVER, if you are worried, give NHS Direct a ring to be safe

wrinklytum · 13/04/2007 00:15

Please do not worry, I am sure he will be OK.

Hilllary · 13/04/2007 00:16

I'd ask NHS direct personally as its paracetamol which is a very very dangerous thing to od on, the affects are not immediate and not reversable, depends really on how much he weighs ect..

Paracetamol & Iron are not to be messed with.

Sorry, posted too quick. The dose is in fact only 120 milligrams per 5ml and an adult dose of two tablets is one gram.Am furiously trying to locate my BNF for max paediatric dose but I am pretty sure he will be fine.

SleepIsForTheWeak · 13/04/2007 00:21

have called NHS direct and they will call me back in 25 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feel really upset and stupid

wrinklytum · 13/04/2007 00:24

Please dont feel like that. You are a loving mum and worried.Believe me when you are sleep deprived it is easy to forget what day it is never mind what hour.Am sure your little one will be fine.Hugs

Hilllary · 13/04/2007 00:25

25mins!! thats discracefull

Bupa 24hour helpline (just like NHS but you speak to them right away)

08456013216 (not sure if you need to be a member but I dont tink so)

NorksBride · 13/04/2007 00:25

I've given 5ml spoons when it should have been 2.5ml, two spoons when it should have been one. Comes of having DCs of differing ages all being ill in the small hours. They were all fine.

My DD1 had a bout of arthritis last year and when she came out of hospital she was prescribed 7.5ml of Ibuprofen every 4 hours - she was 4yo and that was a higher dose than the instructions on the box recommended for 8-10 year olds. So there is obviously room for error!

dolally · 13/04/2007 00:27

he'll be fine - don't worry.

I bet the fact that NHs says 25 mins means it's not on their RED ALERT list!

I remember blearily giving one of mine another dose of calpol thinking it was their cough medicine.

Novacane · 13/04/2007 00:28

its a maximum dose over 24 hours- as long as you keep to no more than the max over 24 hours you will be ok (im not medically trained though)
I work with GP's and one once said to me 'the problem with analgesia in children is that the parents don't give enough to bring the fever down'
I dont think you have anything to worry about, but if you dont get any joy from NHS direct ring your out of hours gp, then will ring you back pretty quick. please let us know what they said!

Soapbox · 13/04/2007 00:31

Don't stress in all liklihood he'll be fine.

How much calpol has he had in the preceeding 24 hours?

Sleep, I know it's no good saying don't stress but I'm sure when NHS Direct ring back that they will say it is fine. My doctor told me that there is a large margin between the dosage stated on the label and the amount that would need to be given to cause problems.

Novacane · 13/04/2007 00:41

you will be defo fine as its measured over 24 hours. what did they say?

SleepIsForTheWeak · 13/04/2007 00:46

whew
they said not likely to be damage if under 150mg per kg ( I think that is what it is) and they worked his out at 40 per kg.
Thanks for all the posts, I really love MN at times like these.
Damn, it just brings it home to me home to me how quickly accidents can happen.
KZ, hi, I am not going to be able to sleep for a while now!

A 25 minute wait would not have done any harm as they have to wait at least two to three hours to get a proper blood level,

ibuprofen is often prescribed at higher dose than on the box it isn't as dangerous as paracetamol syrup

Paracetamol tablets aren't really as dangerous as you would expect for children (they taste so foul that they will spit them out so would not normally get more than half a tablet)

Iron (especially ferrous sulphate tabs) are sugar coated and are available in pots of 100 so a child could get the lid off the pot and take a handful before you know what was happening and this can be fatal

Hilllary · 13/04/2007 19:58

kama, Iron is extreamly dangerous, once taken there is no chance of getting it out of the system unless they pump the stomach instantly. You bleed internally to death. Its known for suicide successions.

Paracetamol is equally as dangerous. My sister tried to kill herself, she OD'd on paracetamol, she had her stomach pumped and everything but its absorbed into the body via the ophsofagus(sp?) Her liver looked like she had been shot with a twelve bore shot gun. She was in the Royal Free hospital for months and months, they wanted to give her a donor liver but she claimed she was a Jahovas whitness and refused it. She had to be sectioned in order to receive treatment. I watched her and its not nice..
